errm ok stupid question i bought a wiring kit and wanted to make sure do i need to cut off the wax around the wire and expose the metal bits then solder them or can you just solder the wire as it is I'm only asking because I'm having a nightmare exposing the metal and not cutting everything off ? Its wax wire my wire cutters cut straight through everything ??

Yes you've got to strip some of that. Get some wire strippers, or carefully score around the insulation with a knife and pull it off with your teeth.

When you're looking at the jack you should be able to see that one of the lugs will connect to the sleeve of the plug (the big bit) - that's ground. The one that connects to the tip is hot. You can see which connects to which by putting a plug in the jack. Then follow the bit of metal down and you should be able to trace it to a lug.

I can't stop laughing. "pull it off with your teeth"? Really? How do you install bridge mount bushings? Pound 'em in with your knuckles? <grin>

Here, let me help you with that.
I'm a network engineer.

To the OP: buy some strippers. And treat 'em nice! They're there for your pleasure.

Hey, I don't do that! That's just how I did it before I had any wire strippers!

The knuckle thing though, yeah, what's wrong with that?

Radio Shack has their strippers on sale. I think if you're building your own guitars and/or do any other wiring, that's a solid investment of $7.

I used to bartend in a strip club. The ones for wires are a lot more reliable.

nonsense.. vanessa is always there when i need her. my wire strippers on the other hand always seem to walk away from my tool box.
