Hello,

I want to order a Gecko 5-string neck and body,  I'm not sure whether to get the Narrow, Medium, or Wide string width?  I play heavy metal with a pick.  This will be my first 5-string bass.

Thanks

Officially, "Go play a bunch of basses and measure the one that feels best."

Unofficially, "Narrow."

I play a medium and find that it works well for me with a pick.  I primarily use my fingers but some songs my band work with just sound better with that tight pick sound - and it works for both.  I definitely wouldn't go for the wide if I was using a pick though.

If I was primarily a pick player I'd recommend the small, probably.  Medium is do-able, and wide sounds like it would be a heck of an endurance run :)

Perhaps others have differing opinions though, I'm no expert on picking with a bass. I'd definitely go play around with a variety of basses though to find a preferred string spacing and then find the closest match among the gecko pages.

Both the Medium and Wide Geckos have the same string spacing at the bridge - 19mm.  The Small Gecko is 17.5mm.  The Wide is wider at the nut than Medium or Small.  If you are used to your existing 4-string bass string spacing and it's around 19mm, then you should go with Medium or Wide.  Otherwise, if you're okay with the strings being closer together under your right hand, then go with the Small.

If your fingering hand is used to the same spacing between the strings as your 4-string bass, then you should consider the Wide Gecko.  However, if you are okay with the strings being closer together at the nut, then go with Medium or Small.

I don't think your right hand would be able to feel any appreciable difference between Medium and Wide, unless you played over the 12th fret or something.
