Where White Man Went Wrong

Alright guys, I don't want to get into arguments, but DbU posted something that was more of a mockery of the European's and American's belief that everything they did was superior to anything else, not a racist joke about the Native American population.

Yeah, I probably vented a little too much there because of my intense hatred of racist/political jokes.

From now on I'll try to read only the guitar related threads here.

I certainly don't wish to create a flame thread here.

I was simply sharing my own perspective coming from someone with somewhat more traditional world view.

I think we can all agree to dis-agree, so long as we do so respectfully.  I don't expect to change anyone's mind, and I don't expect anyone to change mine.

I always expect that my heart and mind might be changed.  For me, that's the point of life:  to keep growing.  I agree that flames and arguments are out of place here.  I simply don't understand, as I outlined earlier, and that bothers me.  I'm not too closeminded to get it, and I'm not too ignorant to get it.  I feel like I understand the cultural and social anthropological undercurrents here, and I can't for the life of me find a reason to be more offended for the native person than for the people he's joking about.  I find it mildly annoying and in somewhat poor taste, but not so much that I cared more than saying to myself, "that's dumb, lol."

What I care about is why everyone seems so quick to be super offended lately.  It doesn't make sense to me, and is out of keeping with how I've understood people here to be.

...just kidding. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinions.

I have a pretty good sense of humor, and in my opinion, a comedian isn't supposed to just curse and enforce stereotypes.

That's a good point.
Some of the best humor draws attention to social issues, or even history that is still ( obviously ) a scar on the American psyche, forces people to talk about issues that are still sensitive areas when it comes to social communication, and also points out the level of stupidity it takes to accept, without question, a government or life style that still perpetuates a 15th century conquistador agenda.

Bravo ! ... and thank you and I'm sorry and thank you!

FWIW my Native American friend thought it was funny...and yes the joke is on white people not Native Americans, at least that's how I take it.

Is this an issue of humor or taste?  Something's only funny when it's not about us?  I didn't think it offensive or funny, but what do I know?  Humor always has a winner and loser, which why I prefer self deprecating humor.  I don't mind being the butt of the joke if we can all laugh.  If anything the original post was a bit Archie Bunker-esque a la All in the Family.  In involved race, humor, and kind of made you think.  If you can agree with Archie, then it's not funny.  If Archie's funny, it's because he's an idiot and wrong.

Anyone remember those old SNL "Bill Brasky" sketches?  :laughing7:

I do.

"Brasky was a 10 foot tall mountain of man that could palm a medicine ball."

"He showered in Vodka and fed his baby Shrimp Scampi."

"He'd eat a homeless person if you dared him."

"He once punched a hole in cow just to see who was coming up the road."

"If you put a record needle to his nipple, it would play the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds?"
