Bought a sprayer. I just need to layer some lacquer on top of the spray can lacquer I used last year. Not sure where or even what to buy. I keep seeing brush on lacquer. Should I buy that and thin it?
Lacquer is readily available, but it's usually sold in rattle cans. If you want bulk in quarts or gallons, then you can get it from the usual suspects in the guitar supply trade such as Stewart-MacDonald, LMII, Klingspoor's, etc. You'll need acetone as well, which you can get at most hardware and home improvement stores.
You don't really want to use "brushable" lacquer. It's not its viscosity that's the problem, it's that they add retarder to it to change its setup properties. Shoot it, and you're quite likely to end up with a lotta sags/runs as it stays fluid longer, timing depending on how much retarder is in there. With a brush, that may be a Good Thing as it allows the brush marks to flow out. Not so with a spray gun.
It depends on what part of the world you are in but any quality paint store will have production grade lacquers which are the same stuff Fender used in the 50's. That is what I always use if I want the stuff to yellow up and look vintage.
I get Seagrave lacquer from LMI if I want instrument grade lacquer but it is stupid expensive. I use lacquer thinner and lacquer retarder to thin my finish so it lays down nice.
