When is the next GOTM

But the piece you're missing is a somewhat specific category also encourages people to enter who might not otherwise. We got about as many bass entries (if not more) in the bass month last year as the whole rest of the year combined.

I'm not missing it. I'm saying numerous categories are superfluous. If it's not an exemplary piece of work that stands out against all comers, whaddaya expect?

There's a folder for "Just Out of the Box" so you can show off what you've purchased, then there's a "Work in Process" folder where you can run threads to show what you're doing, there's a "DIY Finishing" folder for asking questions, passing along techniques, or showing off what you're doing yourself, then there are numerous folders targeted at specific guitar designs if you just want to exhibit your work. On and on. You can get all the validation of your wisdom and taste and admiration for your mad skills you need there, and it'll be pertinent.

So, why encourage people to enter a contest? Is it so important to have large numbers of entries? What's more appropriate for a contest is to encourage excellence and innovation. You don't enter a production-grade Chevy Camaro in the Autorama unless you've modified the hell out of it. What would be the point? It's no contest. Anybody can get a stock Camaro. All it takes is a reasonable credit rating.

All that said, I'm not against the contest. But, keep in mind what's being chosen: who came up with the guitar/bass most people would want this month?

How many basses are being built though?  If 100 guitars get build and 10 basses get built, why complain when only 10 basses enter?  Do they have to enter multiple times so it can be fair?

I lean strongly towards keeping the categories simple.  I would not want to see it go the route of the Oscars or Grammy awards where there seems to be a category for almost everything.

Pro and owner finished seemed to do a good job of keeping a level playing field for the finishes.  And we've seen a plain jane win on more than one occasion, BTW.  Throwing in a bass only month one or twice a year gives the basses a fair shake too, IMO.  (And that's coming from a bass player.)  I liked the second chance contest as well.

Throwing in my $0.02USD

I joke about giving the basses their category because it keeps it fair. Trust me - when it comes to coffee table instruments, Warmoth basses can hold their own with the guitars any day of the week.

I've always felt the two catagories for pro/owner and warmoth finish are good catagories, and the inclusion of a bass month once or twice a year rocks ^^.

Soon as i get a job over summer ill have a halfmoth for whatever pro/owner comes up,
And another Z 4 string for the warmoth finish... you have been warned.. fear me  :evil4:

I propose a six month test with NO categories, wide open every time. If it works, then we're set... if not, it's only temporary. Only way to find out if it's a good idea is to try it.

My gripe (if you can even call it that) is with the clique-esque nature of internet forums.  Warmoth is a replacement parts company, and there are other BUILDER forums out there.  I buy Warmoth parts to get what I want in an instrument, and sometimes that's a coffee table, but sometimes it's a chevy pickup truck.

I also feel like some people take themselves a bit too seriously regarding the sanctity of GotM.  My tastes rarely line up with what's "cool," and I would certainly never be messaging people on FB (or whatever) to ask "if they've voted yet."  I mean, I can barely be assed to take pictures of my guitars... because I see them all the time.  They get played a lot, and fixed a lot.  One neck makes way for another as I'm trying to find the sonic color I want to paint with.

So yeah, keep the GotM going, but don't make so much fine print.  A couple unique contests a year would be cool.

I like the GOTM thread.  The way I see it, it's mostly just folks expressing a preference, and then dogpiling on to compliment one another's work.  I also favor simplification.

It is just another great opportunity to post and watch guitar porn!

does it really matter who wins? I think it only counts whoever wins guitar of the Year, and specifically the one for 2009  :icon_jokercolor:
My pick rarely wins anyway :)

Yeah, Haven't had a GOTM I could enter since I started my 1st, and I'm now working on my 5th. :sad1:
What do we have to do to make this happen?  :icon_scratch:

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, "Everybody needs to stop bitchin' about the rules that were in place and stop trying to re-write or add 10 trillion different subcategories". I'm sure all that got very old for those running it.

Okay, here's a PSA:  Everyone's guitar is special, whether it wins or not.  GOTM is just for fun.

We good?  Let the games begin!

That's not going out on a limb - that's God's own truth.

I'll tell you what. If everybody's agreeable, I'll run the GOTM contest. Just a couple caveats/requests.

One, I don't want to hear about inequities or difficulties. You enter an instrument, and it goes up for the vote. End of discussion. Let the chips fall where they may. I don't care if it's a bass or standard guitar, and I don't care who finished it. The only requirement is that it have either a neck or body from Warmoth. It's their servers and bandwidth, after all. Render unto Caesar, and all that <grin>

Two, I need somebody to clean up the images and photochop them to banner-worthy shape. Resize, re-orient, add the award words, etc. I also need somebody with admin privileges to post the winning image each month.

Past that, I don't know what else needs to be done. I'll handle the thread(s) and polling. Shouldn't be a big deal. I'm here all the time anyway.
