When does an unused, brand new body have gray glop on it?

Return Of The Son Of Art Major, Part XIII:  The Re-gurgitating.

Someone would have us believe this is a good deal:

Given the ghastly agglomeration of gray sludge on the body, despite its rareness, it looks a lot more like purchasing someone else's eff-up than a deal for a guitar and a neck.  Maybe it's never been assembled, but who cares, if you still need to rewind to the beginning by sanding and/or stripping aggressively?

Or, alternatively, maybe it was originally finished and this guy (or his predecessor in interest) stripped the body hoping to do something neat with it - and then found it much harder or time consuming than one would have hoped.  Anyway, feast your eyes:

The bad news is this guy really messed this up.  Looking like he tried to dye it black.    Do yourself a favor and give it a wipe with some naphtha.  This will give to an idea of what the finish would look like.

The good news is you should be able to sand most of that off, and either spray or wipe on another color.
