What's your opinion on how dark this would turn out?

Love the grain on this roasted Swamp Ash. The lighter one is second choice. Planning to go with Sunset Orange in Satin. Looking for opinions to see how brown it might end up tho, I am having trouble picturing it in my mind. Brown is no good for me.

There is no direct comparison but it may help you a bit.

I replied to you in the other thread, but I will double post here as well, as I think it's important:

I'd be very cautious of finishing any roasted Swamp Ash with a trans finish. Please see Aaron's vid for this:

I have no direct experience with roasted Swamp Ash myself, but based on Aaron's video, I'd expect the trans Sunset Orange Satin to turn into a weird brownish color with a slightly red hue.
So yes, I'd expect this to turn out way too dark, and not at all like Sunset Orange is supposed to look.
I'd definitely go with un-roasted Swamp Ash.

That helped a ton, thank you! Probably gonna go with red now haha

This is an old thread, but very useful. The YouTube video explaining how roasted ash turns brown when it is shot with clearcoat has me worried about my next project. I was going to try a Red quilt top over a clear coat roasted ash body, But if roasted ash turns brown I certainly don’t want that look. Any suggestions about how to finish the back so that it doesn’t clash with a quilted maple top done in red?

I’m using Dyes and rattle can clear lacquer. I’m not sure I can do a transparent color on the back. I do like the idea of a natural mask binding.

I've done Keda dyes to get a transparent look. After you've dyed, then put on a layer of something clear like thinned wipe on poly or tru-oil. Actually, I think that whole guitar would look good in just clear. It's real pretty.

something i stumbled over, using the dye in shellac over natural wood. i ended up with a transparent finish20220713_113400.jpg
