Never tried it, but you might consider P-90 mounting screws: #3x1-1/2", wood screws that look more like sheet metal screws. You'd need to drill out the threaded holes on the pup, and use a spring between the pup and the body. (Or, as Aaron suggests below, foam.) Just a thought...

To the best of my knowledge, Warmoth does not sell specific screws for this purpose.

This is correct, unfortunately. For whatever reason, Warmoth does not sell these screws....or the foam pad that goes under the pickups. OP: think Tele neck pickups. That's the stuff you need.

Use these screws: https://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Screws_and_Springs/Pickup_Height_Screw_for_Tele_Neck_Pickup.html

Use this foam: https://www.stewmac.com/Pickups_and_Electronics/Pickup_Kits_and_Parts/Pickup_Kits_and_Parts_for_Jazz_and_P-Bass/Pickup_Height_Foam.html

I was just think'n, P-90 screws are meant to go through the top of the pup, but the mounting ears on HBs are a close to an inch below the top. The screws Aaron suggests would definitely be a better choice.  :tard:

Humbucker mounting ring screws have served me well for a couple of decades now.

This also works great if your pickups have long feet, and mounting them directly to the wood gets you the height you want.

If your pickups have short feet, and/or you want their height to be adjustable, you have to use longer screws and foam.

Never had a problem with humbucker mounting ring screws. Used them on a bunch of different setups. They all worked great. Plus you dont alter the pickup so you can mount it traditionally if need be.

I've used long ones on pickups with short ears before like the screws for the carved top rings.
Just pre-drill the hole & don't over tighten.

On my Soloist, I used some screws that I already had from another guitar I scrapped out (the single-coil neck pickup was mounted to the wood), but if I had it to do over, I'd see if I could use threaded inserts and 3-48 machine screws. That would eliminate stripping out the holes if multiple pickup hight adjustments were needed.

What would you guys suggest to mount single coils directly onto the body.
My idea is to put them in a velocity body while keeping them adjustable.
thanks.

Bagman's suggestion is good. It's difficult to get height adjustment with wood screws, regardless of size, due to shape. They generally end up loose. Inserts with machine screws will allow you to use some sort of rebounding material or springs to get the height right.

I've mounted dozens of pickups direct to the body and have never had one just come loose. It's really not much different than using a ring or pickguard. Even more so if you're able to use springs underneath the pickups. Advice usually comes theory or practice. Take it with a grain of salt. The only way I would use inserts is if the screws were going to see slot of action. I'm talking like new pickups every week kind of action. :dontknow: :occasion14:

would you say then that the parts aaron suggested are more than enough?

Those will get the job done.
