is nitro cellulose lacquer the only finish you can spray from a gun or can you spray poly urethane and is there any other type of finish you can spray sorry im a noob

I'm not sure there's any finish you can't spray from a gun, although it's sometimes easier/better to do it other ways. For instance, you probably wouldn't want to shoot dye; that's more of a rub-on sort of thing. Same with oil. Polyurethane, on the other hand, you definitely want to spray on.

I had a cat once, that would spray just about any finish on a guitar that you could imagine, if you were stupid enough to leave it within range.....

Speaking of ambitious cats...I had an old mid-'60s GA-55RVT Gibson amp when I was a kid that blew up because I had pulled the chassis for some reason and left it on the floor overnight, and the cat hosed down the high voltage supply section. When I turned the thing on, Poof! Cat didn't last too much longer after that. For some reason, she decided that everything but the litterbox was a better thing to relieve herself in/on. When my dad's workboots finally got her special brand of attention, that was the last straw.

Gibson GA-55RVT "Ranger" (thanks to Gary Brookshire)

It really pissed me off because I was probably only 13-14 years old at the time, and didn't have the know-how or resources to get the thing fixed. Ended up going without an amp for a long time, and suffering a series of real crappy ones (Fender Champs, Princetons, junk like that) when I could find something in my price range and ability to get home. The Gibby was fun while it lasted, though. 4x10" speakers, reverb, tremolo, 50 watts. Lotta amp for a kid in those days. Parents absolutely hated it <grin>

When I think back on all the amps we used to just hate and trade around in an attempt to get something "good", it makes me laugh. Those things are highly sought after today.

Sorry about your amp.

on a side note, if a cat that is normally clean, and you keep the litterbox clean, but the cat changes their bathroom habits, it could be , and usually is a sign of health problems.

haha great cat stories but if i sprayed polyurethane would i have to thin it? and if i did what would i have to use?

Different manufacturers have different formulations. You'd have to choose a paint first to find out how you'll mix it. Some catalyzed paints are actually 3 parts - the paint, a reducer, and a catalyst. Others are already reduced, and just need a catalyst. Some don't use a catalyst at all.
