$810 for a Strat neck?  Is it that quartersawn maple with a flamed pattern is so rare that the neck costs this much?  Other than the wood, I don't see anything else about it that would justify that price tag.  Anyone else have any ideas?  Wowsers!  :icon_scratch:

I just "built" a quartersawn maple neck in the configurator with all the other features the same.  The cost:  $382.  So the piece of wood used, the "flame quartersawn maple" has a premium attached to it of $428!  That's one mighty fine toothpick!

It probably is the quarter sawn and combination of flame. I doubt that there will be that many pieces like that.  Perhaps it's also a test to see what sort of price it can attract  :dontknow:

Yeah, I think you're exactly right.  It's probably pretty rare to get a piece of maple that exhibits flaming when quartersawn.  What surprises me is that they didn't make it with their double truss rod, that they already fretted it, and that they already put a GraphTech nut on it.  Kind of limits the potential buyer population.  I wonder if it was a special order that someone backed out on?

It's quarter-sawn maple (not flamed though), graphite reinforcement rods, SS frets, paua-abalone dot inlays, rosewood fretboard, custom headstock shape, satin clear finish.

I often see necks or bodies, where I think if only it had different size frets or nut width, but I suppose the most popular choices are used if it isn't a special order.

I think the point here is that it is flamed and quartersawn.  I personally have not seen quartersawn maple with flaming, before.

Actually, I could not justify the cost of that neck.  I love the concept behind quartersawn maple and tend to use if for my maple-necked builds.  I also love the look of flame maple.  But a $428 upcharge to get both in the same neck makes me fold my hand.  Now, if it had 6100 or 6115 SS frets, had an R4 shelf with mounting holes, and a satin finish, then....nah, still too much.  :tard:

It's a single piece of quartersawn flame, not a two-piece (neck & fretboard) hence the single truss rod.  I prefer the Pro, but there are lots of players who think one-piece necks sound superior and those are the same people who will pay a premium.  Pretty smart if you ask me.  There are also a number of one-piece necks in the $700 range so I don't really understand the hissy fit.  And, like others have said, I don't think I've ever seen that combo on the W site.  Can you imagine what the price would be if it came out of the Fender Custom Shop?  Match it up with an $800 Koa body and you're still going to be 1/4 cheaper than a similar offerings from the big guys.

I don't see anyone throwing a "hissy fit."  I thought we were discussing a very pricey neck.  And, I'm sure that neck is worth that much to someone.  And, as you say, it is probably less than if it came out of Fender's custom shop.  I can't speak for others, but for me personally, I couldn't justify the cost to myself.  But I am sure there are those who could.  Like I said, I've never seen flame in a quartersawn maple neck.  That, in and of itself, is pretty unique, to me.  Is it $428 unique?  Not to me, but to someone else, quite possibly.

I bought a brand new Chinese-made maple/maple Strat neck on eBay for $38, true story. The fret ends are sharp and need leveling but that's the only real problem on it that matters (I mean REALLY sharp). Could fit a hair tighter in the standard pocket but a finish might make up the difference. Going to buy a bunch more to pick through, practice refrets and finishes.

How does that relate to a $800+ neck? No idea. I don't know how to relate to an $800 neck. I only have $300, maybe $400 neck hands at best.
