WARNING : Careful with screws supplied with Gotoh Vintage Style tuners !!!

I install Dunlop straps locks on a very regular basis ... install them into Ash, Maple, Alder, Mahogany, Spanish Cedar, Poplar, Prima Vera, you name it

the secret is to drill the right size pilot hole, of the right depth ... and the use the right sized Phillips head to turn them into the hole. nothing has changed in the supplied screws since I can remember

if you get sloppy in your prep, or sloppy with turning the screw into the hole - you'll strip the head. if you prep properly and turn the screw with a steady hand on the driver - it'll go in like a champ

all the best,

Soon I'll be doing this with my strat neck.  I'll yet you know how it goes.

Necropost!

The strat was done ages ago.  Tuner screws went in with no problems.  Right size drill, wax, right sized screwdriver.  Was a piece of cake.

You guys. All doing your correct setups, using the right tools and the proper procedures, then getting professional results. Who do you think you are?

Why, I remember when my only tool was a bent-up rusty butter knife I found in the alley. Took a long time to carve bodies out, and then we used the concrete sidewalks as abrasives, but by God they were good bodies! And our frets were fairly straight, too! So we rounded off a few of those goofy screws designed by that commie, Phil Lips. We were proud! If something didn't fit, we broke off a piece and made it fit! Things had to be right!

Correct screwdriver. Phbbbt! If I had a nickel for every time someone said I needed a correct screwdriver...

IF they sent stronger screws, and you still did not drill the approprite pilot hole, what would happen?  The screw would not break, but you would probably split the wood.  Something has to give.

Then people would be complaining about the 'quality of maple" used in the neck.

Something I learned many years ago with wood, no pilot hole = split wood or broke screws.

Tuner screw breakages must be so prevalent that StewMac now sells a whole kit to deal with this problem.

I created an account here just to add to this thread.

No matter how careful you are, the Gotoh screws can break. I have fitted tuners and string trees on many occasions and never had an issue. The screws that Gotoh supply are complete garbage. I will not buy their products due this unless I use different screws.

I haven't read ll the comment on here but the people going on about needing to use the right technique are off the point. It doesn't matter if you do it all exactly right, the screws are garbage for sure. It takes hardly any force to break them. I never had this happen with Fender parts.
