Warmoth Vintage Explorer Copy - UPDATE 1/25/10

While I do like the tortoise (for a change) the black matches the headstock better.

best explorer copy ever!

Like I said, my suggestions are pure speculation.  Sounds like you've done your homework on the pickup front so hopefully that will work out ok.

On the bridge side, I think the metric v. US may still be the issue.  In fact I hope it is as all you then have to do is swap the parts out.  No wood work required.  Check the tonepros website for more details.

That aside, the mahogany looks great.  If I were in your shoes I would drop the pickguard altogether if at all possible.

That is a great looking Explorer. Quite possibly the nicest one I've ever seen. Both pickguards look great, and I'd hate to have to choose one, but I think I'd go for the tortoise for that added retro-quirky kinda thing. Either way, good call on not going with white!  :laughing7:

I'm a huge explorer fan. That one is beautiful!
I like the Tortise pickguard.  :cool01: < i think that little dance is so cool.
Anyway, the black looks great too, so you cant really go wrong.

something for you guys to remember when deciding on the pickguard (for me) is that my headstock will not be black. Unfortunately it will be maple. Thank you all for the support on the guitar. I've been here a while and havent seen any explorer builds. Just super strats and teles

UPDATE: 10/3/09

So i've reached the assembly phase of this little project, and i have a question about this headstock. I put the low and high E strings on to check alignment of the pickups and everything, and i noticed that the High E string can barely stay in the nut. Like it REALLY wants to just jump out of the slot. Do you think i need a string tree with this KWS headstock? or do i just need to file the nut slot down a little. I actually haven't even tuned the string all the way up to pitch because i can just feel the tension building. I'll post some hi-res pics of the nut to show you how high the string is, and the angle of it hitting the nut. Everything is looking beautiful though, as you can tell.

First, some shots of the nut:

Thanks for all your help thus far guys.

That's looking good so far  :icon_thumright:

I'll wait for the nut closeup before saying anything, though.

I've never seen one of those headstocks without a locking nut and a retaining bar.

Doesn't need a locking nut, it has no trem. But I will agree it needs a tree...

The more i look at it, the more i think the nut just needs to be filed a little more, the grooves look really shallow. But ill wait for some more replies first. Thanks so far guys.

did I say it needed one? That's your job. :laughing7:

Great build, congrats. That high E string situation isn't going to work. Best case, it binds in the nut like hell causing tuning probs. Get string trees, and mount them so there's at least a 10 degree angle coming back off the nut, and the string is pulled straight through the nut - one straight line from the string tree to the nut to the bridge. Put some pencil lead under the trees as well to help with tuning stability.

Farny's on the money. That headstock needs some extra string tension. Without trees, the strings won't even stay in the the nut.
"Good advise mah fwend!"

that's a KWS - - it doesn't seem to line up the same way. I'd get one of those retainer bars for it. Like I said every one i've ever seen has one. If someone can get a picture of one without it, I'd like to see it.

This actually looks awesome!  I wasn't sure about the W's Explorer shape, but this is good!
