I agree. what I want is rarely in the showcase, if at all. unless I want something in particular, or the showcase piece is too awesome to let go. then I'll build a guitar around that part, as I did with my 2 latest builds. those singlepiece flamed/quilt maple top-les pauls where just showcase parts. the necks were custom, ofcourse. I don't like standard thin (well, I do, but not as a custombuild for a guitar with such a lovely top, and to play an entire night with a standard thin neck will cramp up my hand).

The coolest thing about the showcase to me is that it gives you ideas you might not have had before. "Wow, that _____ body looks great in a ______ color and a _______ pickguard." If they happen to have what you really want then even better! The necks are probably my favorite showcase item, even though I don't view them very often. But it's great to sort through neck after neck looking for cool figuring in the combination of features that you really want.
