Volume Jump

Will a super distortion S in the bridge position of my highway one strat give me a volume jump when I switch to the bridge position?

i would think it would a little bit, but you might be able to counteract that by lower the super distortion, and raising the others. i bet even just a fraction of an inch would get them all to acceptable levels.

I'm actually looking for a jump. The band I just joined plays with ridiculous dynamics that pedals and knobs alone aren't quite reaching. I was thinking a hotter bridge pickup could help to achieve a little more dynamic diversity.

I was also thinking about the fast track 2 or the billy corgan-2.

i've heard some great things about the fast track, but never gotten to play one. same with the billy corgan-2. i'm a super distortion guy myself! love them. clear and great tone whether clean or distorted.

and if you're looking for a volume jump i think you'll find it with any of those 3 models. maybe not an extreme difference, but they should be higher output than the highway one's stock pickups. and if you really wanted a difference you could replace the pots with 500k's? that would definitely open up the bridge pickup a good deal. i'm pretty sure the highway ones come with 250k's in them...

I would expect a pretty big volume jump from stock strat pups to a high output ceramic bucker. I doubt that pickup height adjustment could really make up the difference, if you wanted to, without sacrificing the sound of the pickups overall. One possibility is to wire your second tone control to be a bucker volume - if you want a jump when switching pups, you can leave it at 10, if you want even volumes, then back off of it. I would probably put in 500k pots as well while I'm in there.

I played a no-name strat this summer with an Area 57/Area61/Super Dist-S and it definitely had a jump in output on bridge alone.  The tone was also pretty different (non-Stratty) in that position so I passed on the trade.  It's doable but you'll get more than just a gain bump.

You could also go for an EMG PA-2 other switchable preamp, but I agree with these guys in that a clean boost pedal is probably better overall.

Get a clean boost pedal.
One that goes to "eleven"... :headbang1:

that's another possibility i was considering. If it goes to 11 i'm all for it.

Getting one of those is like having your own personal PA guy back at the mix board turning up your slider for solos...

...except you have to step on him.

Volumes gonna jump like a gringo bitin' into a Tijuana tamale.

How long have you been waiting to bust that one out?

Back since I dang near passed out as my throat constricted from the mega-Scoville's in that diablo-enchilada!

I agree! With everybody!  :hello2:

Everybody that says to use your knobs, or a boost, or something. I think it best to always choose pickups for the tonal range you're looking for, and fix up the volume later. I usually use a 500-watt amp, so I have a little headroom to play with. :toothy12:

Yeah I'm thinking my biggest problem right now is just the amp that i'm playing through. I can't wait to get my 100w carvin back.

i did say that a distortion pedal and knobs alone weren't covering the range though.

Which clean boosts would you all recommend?

Can't go wrong with a single transistor booster ala the EH LPB-1, though I feel they add a little bit of color. An op-amp booster such as a MXR Micro Amp is a good choice for more transparency. I've found that an op-amp/diode clipper pedal like a DOD 250 is a great booster if you pull the diodes-you still have 2 stages of gain and can dial in a little (extra?) grind even without the diodes.

Just thinking a little more about this. This is something I haven't seen mentioned much, but for a shattering volume boost, try putting a booster/od/distortion/fuzz pedal in your fx loop. Be very careful with your levels though, those types of pedals react very sensitively in the loop.

i tried the boost-into-fx-loop a few weeks ago. i did get EXTREME volume boost, but i thought the sound went a little.... stale. shook out alot of dynamics.

FYI i was running an Mi audio Boost Buff through the loop of my orange rockerverb. i also tried it with a danelectro trans OD and same thing, didn't really like the sound. just a bit dead, or something. thought maybe it was the fx loop itself, but then found the same result in my H&K switchblade.

but hey, thats just my opinion on my own experiences. i definitely wanna try some more. i have trouble getting a significant boost on my solos (wow, i bet no guitarist has heard that complaint before  :tard:)

I can't believe that after all the smart people who chimed in here, your all looking at problems other than the guitar.

Somethings not right, it's either a linear pot, a bad connection that fights for a while then gives up, backward polarity on the output jack, or the pot was (is) fried. we all have in our guitars, what OP is supposed to have, and we don't have this problem. Fixing it with pedals is absurd. The guitar should work like all of ours do, nice gradual progressive volume till its 100%

I've had a couple eggnoggs so I can't think straight, but it just don't sound right. ACME pot? acme makes a lot of stuff, I didn't know they made pots, i think i'd start replacing stuff and I'd start with the pot
