VIP Baritone Update

So I finally got some time to devote to the VIP Baritone.
I have been tire kicking on color for a while now.
I "needed" something reddish (for balance with the others)...and wanted to compliment the zircote fingerboard.
This is MEK Red wiped on full strength and sanded back, followed by a rub of the StewMac Colortone Yellow,
and a few coats of clear.

Shocker, it came out orange.

Just did a natural binding around the sides.

People have said it looks PRSish

The back is natural, and I'm sort of kicking around the idea of an orange tint.

I have all the hardware (black) except for pickups.
Kinda thinking black alumitones.
I'll swap out the ferrules later.

I just couldn't resist adding a burst.

I was going for clean and narrow, to frame out the outline.

I used a $20 airbrush, and black MEK dye (a squirt) added to lacquer 50%, thinner 25%, and retarder 25%.
I had the best luck with a real fine spray, and built darkness with repeated passes.

I'm thinking of tinting the back in black a bit, to bring out the contrast of the "binding."
It would also tie in with the black hardware.

The burst is a great addition - I think it will help tie in the dark neck wood better than the straight orange.  Keep up the good work!  :icon_thumright:

I prefered it natural, but still looks cool!
I cannot lie, I do too. But it's not my guitar.... :dontknow:

Yea, but I just had to use the new airbrush.
:laughing7:

To put it in context though, I have two other flame tops that aren't bursted.
I thought a burst was necessary for the collection.

In person, it does balance the edges nicely.

I tried bursting the sides and back in a similar manner, didn't really like it.
Wiped it off with some thinner.

I think a black tint is the way to go.
Not too much.

I like the black edge on there. It defines the shape, and is a good contrast to the natural binding, which was getting lost against the top color. It looked great before, I think it's even better now.

I like the finishing work you are doing on that body.  :icon_thumright:
