Some folks are mighty testy on this topic.  I would suggest there's a difference of opinion that need not elicit so much vitriol.  Preferences are preferences.  I might as well get snotty with someone because they like celery chunks in their tuna salad.  I mean, *I* would turn it down if offered, but I wouldn't suggest the folks who like that kind of thing are somehow *wrong*.

What vitriol? I didn't see any on either side of the discussion.

I'm thinking, that on a well mannered forum such as the UW, that's about as close to vitriol as we get! (And I'm very happy about that...) Good discussion gentlemen, merit on both sides, comes down to personal taste. And there ain't no accounting for that!  :laughing3: :laughing11: :laughing7:

I get the universal route on all my Strats. It makes pickguard removal easier, and gives you options for pickups. Anyone who says it affects the "tone" is clueless.

Guess I'm clueless then...ya want more wood in the body, YMMV.

There are loads & loads of Fender Stratz from the early 90's that were O.E.M. routed Uni that folks would otherwise not have know were Uni-routed unless someone went to yank the pick guard to slap a humbucker in there thinking that they would need to hog out more wood, only to find that it came that way.
That was Fender's way of keeping production efficient & just loading various pick guard configs to supply the demand in the market place without running different routing programs on the CNC's.  That was before they had the number of manufacturing facilities & production runs that they have now, of course.

On a top route, I prefer the uni-route.
Allows you to swap out pre-loaded pickguards for various applications.
I like the idea of having multiple pickguard configurations ready when having multiple actual Strats in the arsenal is impractical.

I agree but for a different reason... having all those extra loaded pickguards is a great excuse to buy more bodies and necks to put them on. Practicality be damned!

I honestly don't think it makes a ton of difference either way. Some people do. Whatever....it's all good.


But I'll always remember this: when Fender was doing swimming pool routs on their USA instruments back in the 90's and 00's people were appalled. There was wailing and gnashing of teeth at Fender's inferior workmanship and tone-robbing, cost-cutting moves.

Here's some news, there's probably a bunch of things that are important to you that aren't important to other people. Maybe blue paint sounds better than red paint to someone, why do you care? The need some people have to exercise control over, or broadcast their disapproval of, other people's choices causes a lot of heartache in this world.

I don't care what people's preferences are, but the O.P. asked for opinions. The only thing I take issue with is the ludicrous notion that the tiny amount of wood we're talking about is detrimental to the tone or structural integrity of a Strat.

You are all crazy. Paint is THE tone killer. If it’s not dyed you are killing it.....clear cloat is transparent to the mojo so that’s ok.
