Unbalanced pups??

I have not yet encountered this but the one thing I know almost nothing about through this whole addiction is wiring, sooo...

What do you do if one pickup is louder than the other?

The Thurston Moore in me wants to duct tape a volume pot to balance it and hide it under the pickguard, but I'm guessing that there is a more obvious and less stupid solution.

Adjust the pickup height.  You can get the louder one to be less-loud (aka quieter) by backing it off a bit since it will have less of a frequency draw on the magnet.  This will (possibly to a very small-to-negliglbe amount) increase sustain since they won't be pulling the strings quite so hard.

I second the height adjustment thing. If that doesn't get you there, I'd replace the pickup. Putting an internal trim pot in is one solution but obviously it won't just make it quieter, it'll affect the tone as well.

Height adjustment affects the tone too, not just the volume.  There is a sweet spot in there that's not to close and not to far.
