Tuner Holes...

Would  I be correct in assuming that the Schaller tuner holes are the correct size for the typical Fender locking tuners? I am asking this for a friend who is considering a Warmoth neck for his Strat-Plus. It has the old Wilkinson roller nut, which he likes, so I assume he'd have to get a LSR nut and have the shelf cut for that.

No way to know for sure without measuring it. Should be easy enough to pull one off and measure the shaft.

Yes they are the same size. They are Schaller designed and made in Germany. I have installed several sets.

I know that "Fender sealed" tuners were for a very long time made by Schaller and were actually a really good deal if you came across them minty, but I'm pretty sure Fender has moved the sealed squared-off tuners over to Ping in China. Which isn't necessarily tragic, they've been making great tuners for Ibanez for a long time, but they DO have varying product lines. Unless you SEE the "Made in Germany" printed on 'em.....

no korean made shallers?

They exist. Although, I'm not sure if they're Korean or Chinese. Guitar Fetish sells them.

They compare them to Sperzels, but the part itself resembles a Schaller Mini-Locker more than a Sperzel. I've used them on some cheap guitars for friends who wanted locking tuners but didn't want to spend the money for the real McCoy. $33 vs. $75+ being the motivation to take a chance. They're not bad parts - I'd use them before I'd go without lockers at all - but they don't feel quite as good somehow. Breeding tells, although they beat the snot out of any of the "Vintage" beer can tuners out there.

It gets confusing. I believe that all Schallers are still made in Germany, but of course when a company sells off their name to the highest bidder, the new owners don't want you to know that they're pushing out cheap parts under a previously-high "perceived-value." And when you want to make a quick killing, you buy up a name like "Grover" and slap it on the cheapest possible junk tuners. But then when that backfired, the new owners of Grover improved their quality again (somewhat). The market for old Grovers is now turning into one of those weird little collector's corners, because if you're trying to restore a $25,000 1940's D'Angelico or Martin you do not want the new ones... so now the new Grover co. has started turning out product lines with the word "Vintage" in them, just any last shred of deceit possible to make a buck. If you do happen upon some real old Grovers, not faked, they can go for $450-$600 - maybe one of the last pawnshop finds in the music world! So of course there is now a healthy Ebay market for faked new old Grovers, and even faked old new old 60's & 70's Grovers, with the little this'n'thats that expert Grover connoisseurs can... aw, frick'm. :help:

Wilkinson is another one with a variety of levels of quality and manufacturing points, and there are little streaks of great, and awful, products that appear and disappear. And this is even rarely apparent from the "licensed by" heading. Look at the Floyd Rose universe.... and how insane do you have to be to fall for these?

It doesn't help when a "1959 Les Paul" from Gibson is widely acknowledged to be just another modern product line's name and "antique" and "vintage" and "genuine" are just marketing words.

I have this weird obsession about trying to avoid doing business with companies who are paying buildings full of psychologists to try to figure out insidious & sub rosa ways to trick me and rip me off, and I think (so far, this week) Hipshot, Schaller, and Sperzal are still only running one line of quality. But this is complicated by the fact that the GOOD Gotohs and Pings are great products, too. At least music is real....

All good points, although I sometimes wonder if I'm insane one because if somebody gave me a set of those tuners, I'd wait until they left so as to not hurt their feelings when I threw them in the trash.

The repros are clearly inferior because, as far as we know they're made from a more stable plastic that won't outgas when they finally get to real 'vintage' ripeness. And everyone knows, non gassy tuners are just worthless.

There's pages and pages of Cagey's outgassing. Just search for "6 hole trem" or "Floyd Rose"  :icon_jokercolor:

I have these and really like them. Not only locking, but they are staggered as well if that is of interest to someone. I had my headstock reamed for Schaller by Warmoth and these fit without problem. If anything they felt loose but being the first time I've used these, and this having been only my 2nd Partscaster I don't have much to judge by.

Yep - I have them on my zombie killer as well, and no complaints at all. All of my guitars will be getting them at some point.

I stuck Grover midsize Rotomatics on my Wenge neck. They fit perfectly in the Gotoh/Grover ream.
