Hey guys,
Working on a new strat and did a bright yellow/red burst with transtint (water as solvent) dyes last night. I want to protect the color. I was planning on using Tru-Oil as finish, but am concerned that it will fade. The guitar will mainly be case kept. Any suggestions re: protecting the color from fade? Should I top coat it with shellac and then nitro?

Thanks!

I would use the shellac as a barrier layer between the finish and the dyes.  Then the possibility of migration into the finish is less.  This keeps the lacquer (or whatever) from getting tinted and not having that ultra clear that seems responsible for the "depth" in the finish job.  True, you can tint layers of finish, but a layer of clear is always on the outside.  Anyhow, I would sanding seal it and then move forward with the next finish.
