I have searched high and low on the intraweb and come up depressed.
Anybody know of a company that makes old style thunderbird bass pickups?

bartolini makes those pickups, although i dont know if the look is the same or not.

Rio Grande Pitbull Bass humbuckers have the right look; but are going to be a lot higher output from vintage Tbird pickups:

Available in neck/bridge sets; if you have more questions, call the number on their website, they're great to work with, but if you buy direct there's no discount. Like you should get one anyway....

The Barts have a black plastic cover, I believe. I have also been told they sound really "modern" and not like the traditional Tbirds.

Jack - have you ever used or heard these pickups? Are they modeled after the old Thunderbirds? They look a lot wider, but it could just be the picture.

Nope, will guarantee you they're a lot higher output than the originals; they do have the right look and I think are same size as in the Tbird pic in this thread; you should call Rio Grande and talk to them.

Does higher output necessarily mean a different tone, or just louder?
I'll call them up and ask them tomorrow about it, but this is something I am curious about anyway.

Thanks for the help!

It's not just volume, per se; I'm completely sold on Rio Grande pickups and in every type I've used so far from SCs to HBs to P90s to Jazz Bass pickups, it's like vintage sound, but with more balls. I like it; most all people who try them do. I haven't tried those particular PUs, so I suggest you call and talk to them, they;re straighht shooters.

http://www.fretsonthenet.com/other_parts.htm    they make covers for EMG and Duncan Soapbars that are replicas of the 70's chrome thunderbird covers, they also make the pickup rings to go with (theyre right down the bottom of the page)
