  • I received this beautiful body yesterday to finish for Black Dog.  WOW! This is an amazing piece of wood.  I’m looking forward to doing this in a Cherry Burst. I’ll add pictures as I go so Black Dog can loose sleep.

A gibsonish cherry burst?

Yes, that is what I am hoping for a Gibsonish Dark Cherry Burst...
Or whatever Tonar cares to play with should be great  :headbang1:

I'm glad that is not top-routed.  :headbang:

Yea, I don't think that I would have got it if it was top routed.  Would not want to waste that beautiful flame.

Thanks for taking her in Tonar.  I can hardly sit still in anticpation...
And yes, I will likely lose some sleep now that you are posting your progress.
:blob7: :hello2: :blob7:

WOW that is some flame! Don't forget mine Tonar with this beauty on your bench!  :icon_jokercolor:

Perfect. Those dark ones can look so great. So can the really light ones, too.

with flame like that...I am in favor or leaving off the burst and just going with a deep red flame job.

What color for the back?  Is that alder or ash?

You must have to watch the showcase closely everyday, and be ready to pull the trigger, to get that level of OMG!

Or is that a custom order?

That's as good as I've ever seen in all my years here

I think that it sat for a while waiting to be snagged.  Black Dog should tell us his story about pulling the trigger on it. I’ll tell you this; he scored a great deal for this piece of wood!

Yes, you are correct Tonar.  It was just sittin' there waiting for me.
I am not certain when it was placed in the showcase, but I started checking the RSS feed several times each day the afternoon the sale started.
I never noticed it entering the showcase.  One night I was just sifting through all the pages of strats and stumbled upon it.
I watched it for quite awhile.  Finally about a week before the sale ended, I could not take it any longer...  I pulled the trigger :evil4:

Likely the same dark cherry burst for the 1 piece alder back.  Same as the top...

:rock-on:

Ok here we go.  Sorry for all the pictures but I cut as many as I could and this piece of wood wants to be photographed!

The stain is made with equal parts of lacquer thinner and lacquer retarder with a small jar of Luthiers Mercantile MEK Yellow dye mixed in.  Again I love the stuff!  I'll add pictures as I do additional steps.

Start with the top. Notice I have an extra rag to tamp my stain rag on if it is dripping, I don’t want drips on the wood only stain flowing out of the rag.

Fast and simple!

Moving to the sides.
