Thinking about Mustang - pickups?

Hey all, first time poster. I'm considering building a Mustang through Warmoth, but am a little unsure about what pickups I'd use. Now, I know it's not fully possible, given the scale length as well as other factors, but what, in your opinion would best create an LP-style tone? I've never been a fan of single-coils at the bridge and having to balance a neck single with a bridge bucker just doesn't seem like the route I want to go.

Thanks ahead of time for any help!

While I don't know much about Mustang pickups, I will say that balancing a bridge bucker with a neck single is actually pretty easy, the neck spot is louder, so the lower output single will make it easy to balance out.

I don't know if that gets you anywhere! But the project sounds cool, we don't see a lot of mustangs here, but they are neat guitars  :rock-on:

The default options for the Mustang are quite limited. Either you'll need to call/email for humbucker routing, or use singlecoil sized humbuckers.
If going the phone/email route I'd recommend requesting a more modern bridge like a Gotoh Wilkinson or hardtail.
Seymour Duncan makes singlecoil sized JB, 59, Pearly Gates and other popular humbuckers.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.

Auto - If I remember correctly, Warmoth's Mustang bodies are routed for any type of dual pickup combo, no? I also agree with the bridge comment, as I was thinking I'd go with a Strat hardtail. As for the Duncans, do you have any experience with the SC versions of those humbuckers? If so, which do you prefer/find to be the most true to the original?

Thanks!

Ah yes. They are routed generously. I'm used to seeing them with S-S pickguards on. H-H should be no problem then!
Wording on W's site says: Standard Pickup Routing: fits Strat® size single coils or Gibson sized humbuckers.

If you're going to build a Mustang, get the Mustang tone. Pick up a set of Lindy Fralins. If you want an LP tone, build an LP.  :dontknow:

Auto - Yes, I thought the same thing at first, because they never show the bodies with anything other than the standard pick guard.

Tipper - If I wanted a Mustang with the Mustang tone, why not buy a Mustang?  :glasses9:

This is a little off-subject, but I have this idea in the back of my head to do a mustang or Jagstang with single coils, and emulate the Seymour duncan triple-shots with STSP slide switches.  I got the idea after reading this thread on another forum:

Because you can build a better Mustang.

Hmmm. So custom guitars should just be all about copying existing brands? That certainly simplifies things...

I'm admittedly traditionalist, and biased. So yes!  :icon_jokercolor:

This would tend to blow your theorem all to hell:

:laughing7:  :laughing3: PERFECT Jack! Thumbs up to you for the link.  :icon_thumright: Made me laugh my ass off.

I have a 1970 mustang and if you are gonna put a single coil in the bridge you have to put on at least 11s otherwise it will get to trebley
