The creepiest song I've ever written on a Tele

Still a bit rough. Need to retrack bass and do some remixing.  Inspired by this Gustave Dore pic:

Great work, Frank.  I appreciate how well your rhythm guitar parts lock in with the drum parts in the early measures.  In the lower-volume interlude the delay timing and left-to-right panning for the repeating quintuplet starting at about :59 is really cool, and overall, the lead melody in the major key is nice and hook-y and simple.  I dig how you modulate between the major-key and minor-key leads.  Hangs together really well.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again here, because it applies:  You really have a tight leash on the guitarist's tendency to overplay.  You keep the intensity high by not indulging in the urge to wank all over the track.  I applaud your discipline and self-control.  It pays off here.

Guys, I literally just created a new bridge to enhance the intensity and really drive what I was going for home.  Still rough mix, so no judge.

Really appreciate the feedback, gang. Retracking bass tonight, then followed by a final mix and master.

The drums are programmed.  Like the amp models and effects, I scratch build them all to my liking, which may or may not a good thing lol.

STOKED.  Made a pass at some production and tweaks.  Can't wait to finish the bass line!

May I inquire as to what you are using? I saw in the comments there that you are doing soundtrack music, do you do this professionally? I've listened to the track several times and I just really dig it. Makes me want to be a better guitar player.  :guitaristgif:

I can see this on the show "Supernatural", during one of Sam & Dean's bouts of fighting, when they're off on their own, and secretly wondering what the other is up to.

Very nicely done!

Thank you! I use the stock samples in Logic.  You can make anything sound good provided the sample is good.  It's very tedious - for example, every hit must have a slightly different velocity setting or else it will sound robotic and unnatural.

I've gotten a few placements, but it's not my sole income.  I just so happen to write instrumental things.  Probably because I've heard my own voice!

Uffe: Thank you, my good man.

All:

I've retracked the majority of this with my Seafoam Strat. It's also been remixed/mastered, but let me tell you..this song, in particular, has been the most challenging project I've undertaken yet.  Mixing this has been an absolutely strenuous and frustrating exercise, but I am learning still.  No challenge = no growth. It would be much less challenging without the vocals.  That said, it is still rough, but it's as good as my current skill set will allow it to be.

It sounded great before, but it's even better now! You've done an excellent job on the mix and I love the playing and sound of the guitar. Now I gotta check out the thread about your guitar build.  :icon_thumright:

Bravo!

Thanks, mah brah!

There is so much tweaking that goes on in the production cycle, man...so much that an individual pickup's character can so easily be altered if need be.  You could cut an amazing track with a $50 guitar.

The bridge is a nightmare for me on this one.  Every stringed instrument  and human voice needs midrange for cut, but the EQing of this part is a constant evolution.  Trying to give each part it's own space of the sonic spectrum is making my hair fall out lol.  One db too many and the part is too fat or trebly.  One db too many and it blurs out the other tracks.  On top of all this, Logic X has been so unstable since I accidentally upgraded to El Crapitan.  Regions will disappear randomly, plugin settings will change, drums get deleted...all the most random and annoying things.  GAH!  I need to take lessons or ride shotgun with someone.

Lessons? Not at all. You might give lessons!

And speaking of too many dBs ...

It's like in the beginning of Deep Purple's The Mule on Made in Japan:
"Can we have everything louder than everything else?" (26:53)

I've had Logic Pro X issues with El Capitan as well. Plugins crash sometimes, the program crashes sometimes, and if I try to import something, it sometimes crashes as well. I'm running a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina with 16 GB of ram with an i7 processor... This shouldn't be happening!

Logrinn - thank you and THAT is a classic moment in R&R history.

Timmsie95 - you are correct!  I recorded the majority of my songs on a 2011 MBP spec'd out much less stoutly than yours.  I'm probably going to do a final backup on my Time Machine and roll it all back to Yosemite.  Thankfully, I have an older Mac Tower now with dedicated SSDs and I'm only running my OS on one of em.  Sweet mercy!

EUREEKA!!!!!!! I've figured out the problem holding back the mix!!!!!! Finally!!!!  Leaded a huge lesson here. Will finalize mix and remaster for tomorrow. Will ping y'all.

UPDATED! Just needs very very minor tweaking, but I can leave it be and focus on life now lol.

I just listened to it so missed the earlier versions. Sounds good mix and composition wise to me. Well done...

I've also upgraded to El Capitan, but haven't had time to even start Logic for months, so can't comment.  But the crashes will be software code incompatibilities not the hardware. But indeed it should not be happening.

Thank you, mighty Brohamulus the Third.  Don't mess with el crapitan for now.

I think the mix is finalized now.  Created a cool lead tone by sandwiching a flanger between two big muffs (ha!).
