Ladies and gentlemen, here is "The Booger" in progress. This is my first project and I've been having a ridiculously good time with it.
Body: Swamp Ash, Solid, Two Piece Finished in Minwax Tung Oil Finish
Neck: Flame Maple, Pau Ferro, Nitro Satin
Pups: Rumpelstiltskin Black Rope Custom Spec
Tuners: Schaller Locking
Bridge: Gotoh
Here is the guitar straight out of the box. I did not fill the grain, as I wanted it to feel like wood.
I started by dying it with a black water based aniline dye to enhance the grain. I did something horribly wrong here and made the dye WAY too dark. This was the result:
I then proceeded to sand essentially all of the black off. This step was a huge waste of time and I didn't feel like it enhanced the grain at all.
After that, I dyed it with a green aniline dye and did 5 coats to get the color I wanted. This step worked out well.
I then lightly sanded it to 320 and started with the Minwax Tung Oil Finish. I have currently done about 10 coats over the course of a week and am pretty happy with it. It has a nice gloss, but still feels like real wood. For some reason this image color is not coming across as accurate, it appears more yellow in the pic than it is. Its a deep green:
Just waiting for the guts to come and shell be together. I'm going to get my studio lights out and shoot some real photos soon.
