I rarely use single coils, so I have little to add to the discussion, but I liked your comment above.

Oh man, if only!  I hate noise.  In my opinion, good tone + noise = crappy tone.  I hate it when guitar players choose to just "deal with it" (sorry, Mayfly).  I don't want to deal with it!  My bass rigs are dead silent.  It drives me nuts when my guitar playing friend (or any other guitar player) is oblivious to the extra noise in his rig, and then I have to deal with it whether I want to (I don't) or not. 

I got some hum canceling strat pickups -- I originally got them for me, but I decided to put them in my friend's strat (which he leaves at my place) for when we jam, because I am so sick of the noise.  I'll get them in within the next couple of days.


I am convinced people accept single coil hum either because they've never heard a good sounding alternative, or because they're convinced there cannot be a good sounding alternative.  And that's just as true of bass players as it is of guitar players.
