Tele wiring diagrams/ideas 3-way switch and push-pull pot

Hi there,

Anyone got a wiring diagram for a 2-pickup tele with a standard 3-way switch - but I'm looking to use a push-pull tone pot to get some different sounds, e.g. series, parallel, out-of-phase etc. I guess it's the same idea as a using a min-switch but I don't want to do that. I've looked in vain on the web - any help gratefully received  :)

Many thanks!!

A push-pull is identical to an On/On mini switch - they are wired exactly the same. 4 or 5-way slide switches can also be used.

Guitarelectronics.com has just about every possible use of a DPDT switch as well.  Just decide what you want and somebody will show you how to do it.

Thanks for your help, everyone. Ideally I would like to avoid 4-way (had one of those, replaced it) or 5-way switches if possible. My idea (may not be possible or easy) is to have normal tele switching, then by pulling up a push/pull pot to get some other options - out-of-phase AND series would be great. The issue is that I've been playing teles for over 30 years, and my brain is hard-wired to think 'switch to the left, neck pup; switch to the right, bridge pup. The 5-way switching options I've seen for 2 pups don't follow that logic, they often have 2 bridge selections at opposite ends of the switch (unless anyone knows a great 5-way mod that I haven't come across). Anyway, that's what I'm looking for. And in the meantime hoping that my new strat body and neck I bought in the sale will arrive soon (I'm in England so these things take a while!).

Thanks again for your help and advice.

if you use a super switch you're switching can follow what ever logic you want. they are big and a mess to wire depending on how complex you get.
maybe for the 3-way option if you find a switch that has 4 poles instead if 2 you could have like 2 modes. i don't know if both series and out of phase could be done on a stock 3-way with only 1 push/pull

I was actually just wrestling with the same issue myself, here's what I'm doing on my upcoming tele build. It gives more options while keeping the basic left-to-right tones the same. Need the super switch from stew mac, this would be the view from under the switch. Sorry it's messy, it was just for my own use that I drew this up.

Edit: I don't think series and phase reversal is possible on one DPDT, and besides if you put series operation on a switch or push/pull you end up with a 'dead position' when your main switch is selecting the pickup serving as south coil. The diagram above allows you to not have an accidental kill switch.

I also don't think it's possible to have series and phase on a single DPDT, but you can do series without a dead position with a DPDT and a standard 2 pole 3-way (or 5-way) switch (though some of the resulting positions may not be exactly what you want).

Thanks again for your suggestions. I like the diagram, tfamy, that could be what I'm looking for, I may need to do the superswitch thing, but I agree, they can be hard to work with!

I think funky guitar wiring is like a cool little puzzle, I like to figure out the diagrams that aren't already available elsewhere, even though of course everything that can be done, has been done before. That one is a slight mod of one from Axe explorer "Five tone tele", but I reversed the 2 and 4 positions for just the reason you gave - I don't like it to go quiet-loud-quiet-etc. as I go through the switch.
