I'm going to be attempting my first build well more like my first attempt at dealing with color on guitar body really. but my question was can you just wipe a sunburst or must you spray and what type of paint should I use? could i stain the guitar and the spray if i have to spray?

Hate to give discouraging advice, but sunbursts are tougher than they look. If it's your first ever finish, burst is not a user friendly place to start. Browse the forum, there are lots of threads to read that will help you to understand the process.

Look for posts by Tonar on how to do a proper sunburst. Unfortunately, he makes it look easier than it is.
