Suggestions for removing an autograph from paint

Okay fine.... but I'm willing to pay you...... one............hundred........ billion...... dollars.

No I'm not.

And actually I don't dig that Dan Halen and Sammy Higgles you speak of, I'm way too young...

but I imagine those sigs should fetch you a bit of money...

right?

I dunno.

I dont' care about autographs either but... I think I'd sell it to someone who did unless it was on a guitar I loved so much I just decided to live with it, so my KIDS could sell it. Regardless of your feelings about either autographs or the autographers, its presence adds a certain amount of value. Now if EVH turned out to be a pedophile or mass murderer a year from now, I could see removing it. But otherwise I think I'd let the signature be, and decide what to do with the guitar.

Also, because of WHO the autograph is, this is especially true. Now, I like Blood Sweat and Tears, but wth the big horn section and length of service, they've had over 100 members of that band. If it was their 4th guitar player, (and I'm sorry if thats someone reading this board, no disrespect intended) - it might be cool to ME, the fan, but not something I would expect to show value on ebay.  But in terms of guitar legends, an EVH signature is as good as a JMH signature - or will be once we're in good times and people are spending money frivolously again.

Don't keep it if it doesn't mean anything to you!!
some people may pay extra for it though if you decide to sell it..

out of all celebrities, Ed's signature is probably one of the least lame ones that you could have on a guitar ;)

Eddies is hard to get to, he doesn't like to sign stuff, mostly cause he's a prick....but that's another story, I say sell it to someone who values the sig's...Personally I value Sammy's more than Ed's, but both of them together is a momento of a part of history....And why would you buy a guitar with sig's if they ment nothing to you in the first place.... :icon_scratch:

That's a valid question. Simple answer is, I got a good deal on it, and I was looking for something to refinish anyway. Plus, it had been modded, someone added a toggle for coil tapping. So it didn't matter to me who or what was on it. It's actually a great guitar... killer neck with a maple board, which is exactly what I wanted to start with as the base for the idea I had. But obviously I've yet to do anything with it.

It's been my experience that autographs usually de-value a guitar. And then there's the problem of proving it was really signed by who you say it was. Just seems like more trouble than it would be worth to deal with. But maybe I'm wrong?

Honestly, if it was on a guitar I wanted but didn't care for the autographs, I'd buy the guitar and remove the autographs too.  "Hmm, I really want this guitar, bu there's autographs on it I don't want, so I'll find another guitar just like it."  I don't see that inner dialogue happening.  I think obviously the value of the guitar is increased because both are on there, but there's also the concern of authenticating the autograph.  We have no reason to doubt you, but we're not collector's interested in buying it either.  Like an episode of Pawn Stars, where a guy was trying to sell a Chuck Berry autographed guitar, as long as both of those guys are alive, the value isn't as much because every autograph they sign makes it go down.

Hey, while we're on this subject, maybe you guys can help me with another guitar I have. It's a 1954 Strat, all original. I want to route it for humbuckers, install a Floyd and refinish it in hot pink. What's the best way to remove the pitchforks that will get stuck in my back when I go into the shop and ask them to do this for me?

Save the solvent you use to remove the magic marker with, and sell it in tiny bottles on ebay.

Magic Marker from an Eddie Van Halen autograph! See my other auction for Sammy Hagar autograph ink in a bottle.

Perfect! May I use your wording for the description?

Really if you want them off, isopropyl alcohol will remove sharpie or majic marker from just about anything, as they are alcohol based...
