Stripping finish with citristrip

I have a project underway that consists of an old beatup guitar i bought for a few bucks on the bay
and restoring it, call it a learning guitar if you like for future builds and restorations.

I stripped the neck back to maple yesterday by hand and today i decided i would strip the finish using citristrip
and see how good this product works for future reference.

Heres where i am up to at the moment, the body has had all the rusty hardware taken off it and i sprayed the citristrip out
of a rattle can.

In 3 or 4 hours i will see how its going but for now heres the guitar being field stripped

There is a serious crack through this body i will repair, the guitar will end up a test bed for wiring and pickups.

Stay tuned more to come  :laughing7:

I had a brown recluse bite that looked and oozed just like that:  what  a wonderful wound that was.  Thanks in advance for the pictures of the results.  Where did you find that stuff?  :kewlpics:

In Australia, "Bunnings" in the USA i think you call it Home Depot? or something like that.

I had a Bullmastiff used to leave a similar looking goober all over the house.  :help:

Well i left it on for a few days and nothing but a layer of clear came off the body
so i decided to go for the tinned citristrip instead of the spray just to see if it works better or at all
and then it happened as i was at my bench i heard a thud and looked over to see i now had a guitar body in 2 pieces
on the floor and had come apart from the crack in the body right to the tail, i dont think i have ever dropped a body in my life but this one has hit the deck 3 times.

I will continue trying paint strippers on this thing as an experiment then get the titebond and clamps out and rejoin
the body. Its actually helped abit as the crack that was in the body was going to be a pain to fix and now i have 2 pices to work with  :laughing7:

Cheap guitars, this is what they are made for, to be experimented on.

When finished it will go to some kid who cant afford a guitar, thats if it survives.

Sounds like an interesting project Tony.  How are you going to join the 2 pieces - biscuits, dowels??

Chris i was thinking of drilling each half for dowels then slotting the 2 bits back together, seeing as they are a pretty rough join.

I gotta get this finish off first    :dontknow:

Sounds like time for biscuit joining to me.  The biscuit cutter will make the alignment near perfect

Thanks for the advice guys but i dont feel the need to spend up on a plate jointer for this body
was the reason i was going to try and dowel it. Maybe my neighbour with the shed full of tools has one.

Too bad it broke in half. You could have just shot some acrylic over that goop and voilà: instant Snot-O-Caster!  :icon_thumright:
