stripped neck holes

I have a Warmoth koa neck that the mounting hole has stripped. I want to drill it out and put an insert into it, where can I get the insert in Germany? I need it pretty quick.... (I can't do online orders because I don't have a working credit card at the moment)

Can you elaborate on the mounting hole ?  Do you mean one of  the tuning key grommets or the screw hole at the heel for bolt-on necks ?  In Germany, Schaller would be the most appropriate people to contact.  Their customer service is really helpful.

Drill it out to 1/4", or metric equivalent.  Glue in a 1/4", or metric equivalent, hardwood dowel, then redrill foe the mounting screw.

I mean the heel mounting holes for mounting neck to body. I read somewhere that someone has put threaded inserts into it and I just want to see how they did it and if such hardware is available locally in Germany because I can't do online orders at the moment...

Vintique makes them ( http://www.vintique.com/www.vintique.com/neckkits.html ) but these costs $75.00 plus shipping from U.S.  Try hardware shops or call these people in Germany ( http://www.kompass.com/en/GB80186384 ) to get an idea.

Please please please do not buy anything from Vintique.

The guy I got my inserts from is at:  http://www.onyxforgeguitars.com/Insert%20kit.html

These kits worked great - even under much b-bender stress.

Here's  a link of an install that I did:

onyx forge accepts all kinds of payment methods - including cashiers cheque, personal cheque, and money order. shipping is free world wide.  Looks like they are your folks

Skuttlefunk has a decent thread about these.  Looks like hes recommending 10-24x12mm inserts.  Apparently steel also, as brass and zinc may snap off in hardwoods.

Here's more information on the Onyx forge kits from the man himself (I sent him a link to my installation on Kasmir here on the board and here's his reply):

Hi Trevor -

Nice job - I think you'll find that your new axe has plenty of sustain. By the way, any minor vertical alignment differences between screws is rectified when the neck is snugged up to the body and the inserts fully seat themselves.

What I like about this particular set of neck kit components is that they are somewhat forgiving regarding alignment, yet are strong enough to provide over 1,600 lbs of clamping pressure between the mating neck / neck pocket surfaces.

Remember that when you tighten those screws down not to over do it, as the same amount of torque provides much more clamping pressure when utilizing metal to metal connections with machine threads as compared to wood screws.

Best regards, and thank you for the feedback.

These inserts are zinc plated steel - and from my experience on three guitars they work great.

Very nice, I'll have to check out a set for potential retrofit.  Roy seems like a cool guy.

One problem with dowels is that most all of them have the grain going in the vertical direction - so if you plug holes with one, all of your screw threads are going to be pulling on the same grain. OK for pickup screws, but on a neck you'd just keep fixing, and fixing, and fixing.... Most any pro who's repairing a neck will use a hole saw to cut out "plugs" which have the grain running perpendicular to the screw thread (same as the original wood). I like the inserts too, though.

Thanks for the advise. Someone on reranch is going to send me a few sets of inserts so I'll install them sometimes. I have access to a drill press. By the way in my experience if the insert is off a little bit you can enlarge the holes on the body to correct it, I've done it on acoustic builds before (I couldnt use a drill press there... because I am drilling into end grains and putting inserts there) and it doesn't change anything and you can't tell it's even there on acoustics.
