Stringing a guitar w/ vintage tuners

So I got the Gotoh vintage tuners put on my Strat neck and it's ready for strings, but I'm not quite sure how to go about this. Since they're the vintage tuners, the strings need to be cut to length before I put them on. Does anybody have any advice on what length to cut the strings? How much overhang past the pole?

I cut the E, A, and D strings up about 2 1/2 posts past the post they go in. On the G, B, and high E strings I hold the string to tension at the post it is going in and then pull it back to the low E post on all three and cut them to that length.

Which tuners are these? Is there something special about them? In 40 years of putting strings on guitars, I've never cut them before putting them on, from old junkers with Klusons to the latest and greatest lockers.

If they are split post Fender types, you have to cut them first and stick the end in the hole on top to start.

Interesting. I've never done that, and I'm not sure I've seen it done. But, I learned how to string on an old cheap acoustic, so I was used to fighting junk tuners.
