String Tree Placement Importance?

:-\ I'm hoping I don't get more bad news that this is a critical thing. I know many of you are against placing string trees, but I most  certainly  have to have two of them on a Strat or Tele , regardless of whether I have staggered tuners or not.

Mine seem to be all over the place. When I drill the holes myself, I usually look at where Fender does theirs and try to get close.
I'm a big fan of Tusq string trees, unless I am going of a total vintage look.]

If someone else has drilled them, no telling , cause they are in different places then Fender.

Since they're pointless, placement is not important. If you feel like you have to have them, you're free to put them wherever you like. Most folks put them on the headstock in the way of the strings where they can have the most detrimental effect on the appearance and tuning stability of the instrument :laughing7:

When I'm forced to install them, I just Google the instrument and click on the "Images" link to see where the manufacturers put them, and copy that. At least that choice is defensible.

I use a variant. I first place any headstock decals or logo's that I want to use in the optimum places, then fit any trees so they don't obscure those.

I try never to use them, but if I do I position them so the break over angle is similar to the E and A strings. (The same idea staggered tuners address).

I removed mine from my oldest (80s) Warmoth and have never had a problem and it plays better without them.
