stretching of d'addario strings

hi guys,

I'm making this thread, cause I wanna see if its me who's crazy, or if the strings are really crap.

I've used those strings for quite some time, but they keep on stretching. Even after 'stretching' when I just put them on the guitar, the guitar goes out of tune after a heavy bend. the bridge is a fixed one, so thats not the problem. the nut is a roller nut, so that has very little friction, so; no problem there too. after a behind the nut bend, the note is on the same pitch as it was before the bend, thats why I think it really must be a string-problem.

any other experiences?

so this is the same problem from the other thread about the strings going out of pitch after a bend?

is it going flat after a big bend , then back to pitch after a behind the nut bend?

no, its a different problem. but the same guitar :D

if I do a huge bend, the string is flat.

if I do a behind-the-nut bend, the string stays (kinda) in tune (but still a tiny amount flat).

if I do a huge bend, and then a behind the nut, it still stays flat.

Sadly, you're crazy.

I've used d'addario for, ahem, 20 years.  I've never had the problem that you're describing.

From what I can tell you have a sticky nut.  Widen those slots and maybe add some nutsauce and your problem will go away  :occasion14:

he said he's using a roller nut

I don't have any problems with D'addario strings. They're the only kind I use.

Try this - tune up a string. Do a huge bend. Tune it back up. Repeat. Keep doing it until it stops going out of tune. If it doesn't you've got some kind of slippage problem happening. I seriously doubt it's the brand of strings - but why not try another brand just to make yourself happy?

D'Addario are the only stings I use, probably for 15-20 years now. Never had a problem with them. If I ever had any issues with strings holding their tuning, it was always something on the guitar, whether it was a slipping trem, or locking nut, or incorrect wind at the tuner, or binding nut.

You're not crazy. I bought a strat a while back and got a couple packs of D'addario strings with it.

The thing would not stay in tune even remotely. Switched the strings to GHS Boomers. It's fine now.

tried that too... but it never stops going out of tune. and how can it slip with locking tuners, or a locking nut and locking trem? (had the same problem when the locking nut was installed), and the trem is a kahler 7200, locked down like a fixed bridge). but I have it on several d'addario strings. strange how some players have the problem, and others don't.

I agree with Mayfly.  I've tried a number of different brands but I always use D'Addarios.  Frankly I have never noticed much difference between brands of strings, unless they have some special feature like Elixirs.

+1 D'Addarios, Ernie Ball, and GHS are all about the same really.  They hold pitch, are good quality, and are consistent  between batch to batch.
This is my observation after going through over a thousand sets.

If your guitar is not staying in tune using one of the above brands, it's time to look at the guitar.

And how the strings are wound on the tuners, possibly?

i use ernie balls. start using ernie balls... EVERYONE.

I started out using Ernie Balls. Then I realized they kinda sucked.  :laughing7:  Kidding. But seriously, I've never broken as many strings as I did when I used them. My guitar never stayed in tune either, but now that I'm older and supposedly wiser I blame that on the trem on my cheap Jackson. A friend of mine got me into GHS Boomers, which I like, and now I use Elixirs. They both feel smoother to me.

But I digress. Orpheo, my acoustic is currently strung with D'Addarios and the damned thing won't stay in tune either. However, it often goes sharp. :icon_scratch:

Don't know about the crazy part, but +1 on the strings.

I use the "custom light", or whatever d'addario calls them (9-46), and I've never had tuning issues.  I have a hardtail (TOM bridge), a Wilkinson, and a Floyd, and everything stays in tune.

Its pages 114-115 of Dan Erlewine's-Guitar Player Repair Guide-3rd edition.  It discusses the roller nut and some issues in depth.  It's not in the Second edition though.

Otherwise use the magnifying glass icons at the top left.

I've also had no issues with D'addario strings.  I've only used 9-42, 10-46, and 11-49 though.

I can't even see the pages ;)

but I took a new package of strings, and now my tuning problems are much less!!

Try GHS Boomers, as someone else mentioned.  I've tried many brands, including D'Addarios.  I much prefer the Boomers.
