Long shaft pots are always easier to work with, regardless of whether you need them. If you order them from Warmoth, they include two nuts, a lockwasher, and a flatwasher. So, you put on one nut, set it to the depth you need + a little bit, add the lockwasher, then on the outside you put the flatwasher and the other nut. Doing it this way, it doesn't matter what the thickness is of your top, all the way down to a .090" pickguard, you're always covered. Plus, if they stand off a bit in the back where the pot's body is, it makes them easier to wire.
