Potholes are typically 3/8" in diameter. Switch holes, such as you'll see on a Les Paul, are typically 1/2". Mini-switches like the kids use to put 349 different functions on their guitar are typically 1/4".
SustainerPlayer's right, though. You should buy a caliper. You'll use it a lot, and they don't cost as much as you might think. I mean, a good Starrett unit will run you $75+, but you don't need that. One of these for $17 will serve you well.
