strap buttons

What is the best way to drill pilot holes for strap buttons to keep it strait, also what size drill bit for a standard fender type strap button screws?

i don't quite understand the body diameter measurements.  is it the thickness of the body?  sorry for another stupid new person question.

The body measurement is the diameter of the un-threaded portion of the screw.

The ideal body measurement diameters are 38-24-36 - give or take
