Here are some picks of the staining process. This is my first time staining a guitar body so my technique might be questionable. Ha!

I used Minwax Dark Walnut. Applied one coat and then wiped down the body with a clean rag. Its now hanging in my garage to dry.

Cheers,
Alex

Your technique is not the issue so much as the wood.

Alder hates pigment stain.

It tends to blotch randomly while the end grain reliably soaks up twice as much pigment as anywhere else.

What about the Elvis Costello Fender Jazzmaster Signature Series? Alder body, walnut stain?
Thats what I was going for. Did they spray the stain?

Yes, Fender sprays tinted clear (aka toner) over alder and other woods (like ash) that do not take direct stain well.

Just hit it with another few coats - it'll even out and when you put a gloss on it will probably look cool. A better approach might have been to buy a walnut guitar, though...
