SS frets wearing out strings?

Of all things to worry about wearing out, between both the guitar and its owner, strings have to be dead last in importance. They're the disposable razor blades of the music world.

If your worried about your strings wearing out...

Take the strings off your guitar every time stop playing it and soak the strings in brake fluid.  This will remove the dirt and grime from the strings and will reduce the friction that wears them out.

You forgot to mention that the brake fluid should be boiling. That way you get the scrubbing bubbles. They do the work so you don't have tooooo....

Yeah. It would be a lot more fun to watch if you knew nobody was taking it seriously, because it's actually hilarious. But, not everybody knows they're listening to dingbats so the state of the art stagnates while groupthink takes its toll.

Didn't we already do this thread? I seem to remember me posting that the dark spots on the strings are nowhere near the fret wire and that those specks actually look like rust. I've seen strings sitting on the shelf for too long that that happens to. It's definitely NOT fret related.

I've noticed it's very common for luthiers, builders, studio owners, etc. to engage in various types of sly self-promotion to try to promote, establish or enhance their credentials.

I suspect it might be quite effective on less knowledgeably customers. And I always would get a chuckle when someone would provide a link to Ed Roman's site as a source of "authoritative information" because that's how he presented himself - an excellent example of why arguments from authority shouldn't ever be used if you ask me.

SS frets do not wear strings any faster than nickle frets. The surface is smoother, which results in less friction. It's basic physics.

The SS fret naysayers are really becoming annoying. First they say that they make the guitar sound "shrill" (absolute B.S.), and then they say they eat strings (more B.S.).

I guess I'm worrying too much and swallows whatever somebody says. And especailly like those "authoritive" drewfx talked about. That also makes sense.

I'm going stainless for the next build  :icon_biggrin:

Both my frets and strings are made of adamantium, so I've never changed strings in 25 years of playing guitar.

Too bad you can't clip the string ends off.  Those loose adamantium ends will slice the bejeezus out of you.
