Gentlepeople,

My family and I just spend the weekend at my sister's house near Toronto.  She was complaining that her husband, and amateur carpenter, has been going to auctions and buying up wood.  I asked about the quantity and nature of this wood, and he happily showed me.

Holy.  Crap.

He bought so much wood there is no longer any room to do any work in his garage/shop!  It's stacked floor to ceiling.  And there are some very fine pieces there in all mater of fine wood.

Some things he pulled out are some spalted maple boards.  Very fine stuff.

And now I have a cunning plan.  My plan is to make a spalted starcaster.  Some details need to be worked out (like the basic design, finding someone with a CNC machine, etc), but all that wood just... just... sitting there is very inspiring.

Later,

Trevor

It's all stacked along the back wall and the other side of the garage as well.  There's like a 4 foot slot in the middle of the garage where that table saw is that's free.  kinda.  You have to remove a wood stack to get at the other wood stacks!  It's killer.

what is your brother-in-law planning on building with all that?
I love spalted maple, there's just something "earthy" about it to me, dunno if that makes any sense haha! I really want to build either a cabronita Tele or an SG with a spalted top.

First off, this company sucks, trust me I know. Tell your cousin to by Sterilite...

Secondly, when you find someone to cnc it for you, maybe Skuttlefunk as a suggestion, I have a full scale .DXF file of the StarCaster... :icon_thumright:

Been thinking about this a little.  Could a Spalted wood be suitable for a top on a hollow or semi-hollow body.  It's a really fragile, for looks only kind of wood.  At the very least, a double laminate top with a sturdier wood underneath would almost be a must.  Then there's still a possibility F-hole blowout.  Marko and Luke may recommend curry for the F-holes.

Those Carvins are beautiful! But, they're not bent tops - they're carved. Spalted Maple will break if you try to bend it because the dark lines running through it are actually rotted and soft so they have no structural strength. You can't even get a spalt veneer - just trying to cut it that thin makes it fall apart.

The thing Doug calls a Tele also has a spalted veneer.
It's not a veneer, the top on that spalted TELE of mine is 5/16" thick.. :icon_biggrin:
