"special" finish over black?

I a question about something which I think won't work, but maybe it will, so I don't want to dismiss the idea out of hand. Over on the Alsa Paints web site, they have this special paint they call "Mystics"  which flips color depending on the angle.

You're supposed to spray it over black. Now, if I were to order a body from Warmoth, and had them paint it black, could I spray this stuff over it, and then clear-coat? Would I have to sand the body first to remove any clear coat?  I don't have any equipment, but they sell it in cans, and  I think I could handle that.

i dont know about finishing much but im guessing as a black body from warmoth would be a completely finished body the clear coat would need to go before more paint will apply successfully, but i dont think doing black yourself would be the trickiest thing also gives you practice using a spray can on guitar before the special paint?  :dontknow:
Well just wait for the finishing pro's to answer and you'll know for definate

The problem with doing the whole thing myself is that I want an ash body, and from what I understand that would require filler, etc.  Which I've never done before. So an unfinished body would require > $200 of my time. Not to mention I live in a tiny apartment.

ah ok hmmm well i dont think warmoth do extremely thick finishes, so i believe sanding you could get under the clear coat, but like i say when the likes of tonar get on here theyll know for certain
just thought i should try help a bit without suggesting stuff too much

Ha, I wonder if Warmoth would ship it without a clearcoat?  :laughing7:

^ that was my first thought. Best thing to do is just ask

Yea, I would be concerned about that as well  :dontknow:
I don't think they would, but ?
All they can do is say no...

They might do it but without warranty.

I used a different Alsa product before. i used their 'jet black basecoat' you can get small sizes, or even rattle cans if you have no spray gear.

Alsa products are automotive urethanes, you really want to make sure you use compatible products.

xD yeah!

But seriously. Body shops have all the resources to do a custom paint job on a guitar. and many will!
