Song a Week Challenge

This year I've decided to take part in the Song a Week Challenge on Reddit. Where I write and release a song every week. I've been wanting to do this last year but I never got around to releasing anything, so I finally got off my butt and decided to record something this week and hopefully every week this year.

Week 1's song, Firestorm:

Pretty happy with it overall. I've sort of decided I'm not going to spend hours and hours trying to get it perfect, my main aim for this is to get a nice song and be able to improve myself. A need to work a lot on my vocals and get a better vocal recording setup because you can hear the stupid birds in the backgrounds in parts of the song...So happy with how the chorus riff came along, that was what I built the song around.

Recorded the guitar on my Ormsby 7 string in Drop D, which was a little bit unideal. My plan is to start to buy parts for a Warmoth in about 4-5 months. Planning on; Shell Pink Hybrid Strat, Mint pickguard, Hum Neck Tele Bridge, Wenge/Ziricote neck. Will make a post about it before I start buying parts :hello2:

Thanks for listening.

That’s incredible. It takes me a month or more to learn a song, and that’s with someone else writing it!

I've got a book, by some song writer nobody has ever heard of (which as my nephew points out - why are you listening to what he has to say about it?) but he advocates writing in volume. Like as an exercise.

This was also before the big youtube automated flag everything as copyrighted because someone played a C# in a song in 1993. One channel said they actually had feedback in a song they released get flagged as copyright infringement. At any rate - I suspect this is the death of new music for real, until they fix the computer overlords being in charge of copyright enforcement.  And it certainly slows down new music if you have to figure out if it unintentionally sounded similar to something from ages ago.

Nice!

The birds are complicated multi track special effects from you personally whistling.... that’s the story I’d go with  :icon_biggrin:

Totally forgot I'd started this thread, but here are Weeks 2 and 3.

Week 2 was my attempt at writing something with acoustic guitar, need to learn how to record and mix acoustic a lot better, and my vocals are a bit lacklustre as well, but was pretty happy with it.

Week 3, this last week, I was on holidays, swimming in the pool and walking along the beach, so I didn't have much time to write some music. This was originally a string quartet written in Musescore, but when I got home I wrote it up in my DAW using Albion One and some percussion sounds. Pretty happy with how it came out but the mixing in the bass hits definitely needed fixing.

Week 4; I decided to write some Death Metal, because it's not really something I've done before. The theme for this week is Story and this song is based on a person who lives in a town where teenagers and kids can't leave their village until they are adults. One person grows up and decides to leave to find a treasure and they die trying to find it.

Week 6; Took a break last week from songwriting, but came back this week with a Doom Metal song with some Death and Folk Metal elements to it. This week's theme was Tension. Played around a bit with adding a soft section in the middle of the song. Was pretty fun writing this song.

Week 10:

Week 13: All of the guitar work on this is using my new Warmoth, which I'm really happy with how it sounds. Just wish I could use real tube amps instead of BIAS FX.

Week 14: Tried writing a Celtic-ish Folk sort of song, inspired by Metal bands like Eluveitie and Elvenking. Had so much fun writing and recording this one, so much fun that I did it all in just under 3 hours.

Coming right along, there. So far, the ones I like best are week 13 and this one.
