Hey, all! Its been a while.

I need some input from the paint gurus. I wanna paint my car . . . with this: http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-1913830-Chalkboard-Spray-11-Ounce/dp/B000RMPLJ6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

will it work to just give the car a good wash and stars spraying?

Chalkboard paint? You want to be able to have changeable graffiti on your car?

You'll need maybe 2 cases (12 cans) maybe more.
You want a warm, dry day. Probably 2 in a row. No wind would be great.
You want the car clean, dry, dust, rust and wax free.
Mask off all the shiny bits; windows, windscreen, lights, chome, etc. Use a good masking tape or you'll drive yourself crazy removing it, and newspaper.
Do not try to cover any area with one coat. 2, maybe 3 coats. Warm up the cans if you can just before using them (let them sit in warm water.) Warm spray paint works so much better than cold.
Be patient and take your time.

But, before you tackle this project, ask yourself, "Do I really want a chalkboard car?" You might be inviting some permanent graffiti that you don't really want.

A few thoughts:

1. You are going to end up with some dumbass writing naughty/stupid messages on your car with permanent marker, thinking it will just wash off, when, in fact, it will not.

2. It's going to make you look stupid when your friends/coworkers/random people in parking lots start drawing penises on your car every day, and you get too lazy, or don't have the time to erase it/wash it off before you drive off.

3. You are BEGGING for someone to key your car for the nails-on-chalkboard sound effects.

4. It probably will not look as good as you think it might.

5. Probably not good for your bluebook value.

6. Chalkboards are a thing of the past! You need dry erase board paint!

Just attach some chalk boards to some panels  :icon_jokercolor:

Oh you mean like this

:icon_scratch: .....  WHY ? ......  Do you run a Pizza place or something ?

its a minivan with 230K miles on it, so it has no bluebook. its beat up, so I can't make it look much worse. I'm an art student in college, so it'd be my porta-canvas.

I thought you were a film student? Or are you also studying art? Very creative idea, in any case.

Ok, so that takes care of point 5.  Updown, that car actually looks pretty good. It's like a flat black paint job. If you pull it off right, that takes care of point 4. I would still be real worried about people using permanent marker, and leaving inappropriate messages/drawings constantly.

Permanent marker shouldn't hardly show up if I use flat black. Yes, I'm an art AND film student. I created my own BA called "film and art".
