Smokes

I remember going to see my favorite band in NYC after they banned smoking and it was so great. It was really much more enjoyable. I could actually see them clearer on stage. I'm not kidding. It was crazy. It was nice going home not stinking like smoke too. Sounded better too hahaha - kidding  :laughing7:

I'm pretty sure the reason for the bans is for the benefit of the people that have to work in bars, restaurants, etc.

I think the 'tax bad for you' stuff is a good idea and instead of making smoking illegal they should extend the concept to the less-dangerous illegal drugs as well. Smoking for instance has societal costs - treating lung cancer is hugely expensive and I pay part of that to medicare - why shouldn't the damn smoker pay for their risk up front? I'm not smoking. At the same time if you want to kill yourself to look like Marlon Brando, go ahead, but don't ask me to pay for your hospital bills when you get emphysema on medicare.
I think they should do the same (tax!) with any food that comes in a box and is filled with transfats, sodium and corn syrup (i.e. every food that comes in a box). It puts the true cost of the food more in the users lap (youth diabetes, etc. etc.) and has the side benefit of encouraging people to eat more real food. That's a better solution than outlawing crap imhop. Live and let die, but pay your fair share up front.

+1 to this. It was like a revelation, suddenly going out was enjoyable! At least over here the ban is to benefit bar/club/restaurant workers' health, and has been very effective. Since smoking has zero positive effects and also negatively effects the health of involuntary passive smokers I have no sympathy for smokers' complaints about being harassed/stigmatised.

Aanyway, about those guitars...? :D

I've been wondering why some smokers I know scoff so much at an idea like this:

i mean.. why not?

Before I clicked on the link I thought that by "electric cigarette" it would be something that zapped your lips every time you took a drag.

That would cure those smoking jones in a hurry!  :icon_biggrin:

I used to like Camel Lights. I swear they put heroin in those. :laughing7:

I've never found cigarettes to be the slightest bit addictive, actually. I've never been tempted to smoke outside of drinking. Strangest thing.

I know a guy that uses that.  After the initial $100 for the device, the cost per pack is about $.60 he says.

Smoking is supposed to be the worst thing you could do.  It's so bad that it kills people that don't even do it.  It's also (designed to be) the most addictive thing out there.  Yet I've never met anyone who is addicted to second hand smoking.

I like this bit at the beginning:

"Smokers can inhale the vapours as they would a cigarette smoke and still get the buzz - without taking in any harmful substances."

not everyone realizes that nicotine is extremely deadly

well you don't get enough nicotine from second hand smoke - but you certainly get tar and other things. If you work in a smokey environment every day it's bound to have an effect on your lungs. It's sometimes difficult to get the smell out of stuff in a smoking environment, so I figure if it's getting on everything, it's also getting on the lungs of people that have to live/work in that environment.

I recently read a long thread on another board about a guy who can't get the cig smell out of his guitar.

I might by that if I'd never gotten a contact high before.

All this is moot anyway.  The non-smokers will win this one.  Cigarettes will soon be a distant memory.  Even a smoking President can't stop the smoking bans.

There's still so much we don't know about smoking and genetics.  There are those that have never smoked or spent extended periods of time breathing second hand smoke that will die of lung cancer in their 30s and others that have smoked 3 packs a day since age 12 and die at 100.

STDC, statistics don't work that way - it's very very well established that an individual's likelihood of dying of agressive lung cancer, emphysema or bronchitis increases exponentially with regular smoking. In any population of 300 million subjects you will find plenty of exceptions.

I know it's deadly if you overdose on it (fairly difficult to do), but as far as long-term damage goes, I don't believe there is quite as much concrete evidence.

I'm sure some nicotine gets in your system, but how could you tell? It's got to be a small amount.

I've always thought the contact high was either a myth or psychological. I've never experienced it and I've been around plenty of smoke.

The oldest person of all time smoked until she was 118.  Therefore cigarettes are good for you!  *puff*

When asked on one occasion for her prescription for a long life, she mentioned garlic, vegetables, cigarettes, red wine, and avoiding brawls[citation needed] On another occasion, she ascribed her longevity and relatively youthful appearance for her age to olive oil, which she said she poured on all her food and rubbed onto her skin, as well as a diet of port wine, and nearly 1 kilo of chocolate eaten every week.[8]

I bet she had good cigarettes back in the day - not the shit they have now with all the added chemicals.
