I started with an ash body then torched it to a char all over. Let it rest a bit to cool and made a couple passes with a stiff wire brush to remove the bulk of the mess. Passed with 220 sandpaper sponge a few times before applying stain coats. Cured for a day and I wiped with orange oil and sanded again - 400/800/1200/2000. Applied Minwax wipe-on poly today and gonna be patient as the rest of my parts roll in.

There was a bit of apprehension about torching a guitar body, but I feel like it came out pretty nice. Lots of character and texture. I don't feel like the pics do it justice, you really need to touch it

Wow, really nice!  Was just watching vids on this process last night.  Excellent job!

The problem with cool stuff like this is it means adding still another guitar to the 'to build' list. :laughing11:

That is so cool!  I don't think I would have had been able to convince myself to put a torch to my guitar body, but it worked out fine!

I saw that technique in Japan but people had done it to their houses.  Looked cool.  I understand it lasts longer than painting.

Came out great!

You got the body from Rosser on ebay right? What do you think of the weight and sound of the "hard ash" wood? I guess the jagstang body is fairly small so weight probably isn't an issue but I've been strongly considering doing a build around their RD type body. I'm mostly concerned about the weight, it says it'll likely weigh 5.5-6.6 lbs.

While I'm not a big "tonewood" believer, the ash worries me a bit too as I'd like to get a Gibson-y sound out of it, and I've just never played anything Gibson-y made out of ash. I asked him if I could get one out of alder or mahogany at an upcharge but he said he's only doing hard ash right now unfortunately.

I haven't played an RD but these guitars (the originals, not the RI's) had a maple body and a 25½" scale.

Wow, I knew some of the originals were maple bodied (sounds like they'd be heavy as hell? maybe lightened some by the big electronics cavity?) but didn't realize they were 25.5 scale, thanks

I don't know what the body weight was on the jagstang. It ended up a little on the heavier side with a modern double truss neck.
Rosser will do weight relief at no additional cost, just have to ask when you make the purchase.
