SG build query

Lets just say I'm thinking of a SG build in a solid colour.
OK …
I believe I need a LP or Warmoth 3 x 3 neck at 24-3/4'' scale length ……
Or is it the 25-1/2''    :dontknow:
Most Gibo SG's have binding on the Neck. (I do have a Gibo SG' 61 reissue sitting here)

I think I would like matching body / headstock finish. (That kind-of means a Raw neck is out then)
Could go a matching finish on the headstock and a Satin Nitro for the rest.
Suppose that's closest to a Raw neck.
Or
Just go all the neck (except fretboard) in the body finish.
Would look good, but …. it's more the feel I'm thinking about.
I can sure feel the difference between Raw and Finished necks.
One is like having sex  :icon_biggrin: and the other  …. well  :icon_scratch:  …. it's like thinking about it.

A mate has a Satin Nitro neck and it is bloody smooth too !!

A Gibson SG is just shy of 1-1/2'' in thickness on the body.
So to get that on a Warmoth SG, I need the extra $ 35 option for that thickness or should I say thinness.
That's cool. Plus strange.
Because ..
I haven't got a clue as to how thick the SG's are on the showcase already  :dontknow:
Doesn't say.
Anybody know ?

Of cause SS frets
1/2'' side drill jack hole.
Probably omit some control holes.
NO Trem ….. using a hard tail, most probably a string though type …. really like those !!

Was thinking of NO angled pocket as I like the recessed TOM.
Will that still fit in a SG case ?  :dontknow:
Would the thicker 1-3/4''  Warmoth SG body fit in a case ?

Wonder how a Maple neck with Black Binding with Ebony fretboard would look ?

  Oh Crap ….. so many decisions !!

Any answers / thoughts / idea's / pic's or just plain old rambling on this much appreciated.
Thanks  :icon_thumright:

Funny you should bring this up - I've been having similar thoughts lately. And for as much as I bitch about "vintage" stuff, I'm thinking a bit retro. Maybe reproducing my old '61 Melody Maker, albeit with some modern touches.

Mine had the SG body style, but with the narrow headstock...

I don't know if that image will show up, but it's here if you need to chase it down.

Also, mine was some kind of whore fire engine red. I stripped it almost immediately, because back in those days they actually used lacquer and it was spider-webbed to death.

So, I'm thinking of ordering a tiltback conversion (they were definitely short-scale 24.75") paddlehead from Warmoth and cutting the headstock myself, since they don't offer that old headstock style.

As for the body, I'm not going to be too concerned about thickness. In fact, thicker is probably better. Put some kinda P90s on it. Probably use a Gotoh 510 bridge, or something very similar. TOMs make me crazy for some reason.

I don't know. Just thinking.

OK. Here's my 2 cents. Love my Warmoth SG. Pearl White Finish with matching neck and peghead. 24-3/4" scale.  String through with recessed TOM.

Just went down to measure. Body with finish is 1.774 inches.

No, thank you. I badmouth Floyds all the time, but thank God Mr. Rose came up with them. Literally everything prior to that was pure, unadulterated crap. His was the first practical wang bar bridge. Thankfully, Trevor Wilkinson came up with his design very close to the same time, which was equally effective while being much simpler and accordingly, less expensive.

I removed that miserable Gibson bridge from my Melody Maker almost immediately. That, and I changed the tuners to Grovers, which were the best you could get at the time. I also tossed the P90 and routed for a pair of PAFs. In fact, that was the main reason I ended up putting another solid finish on the thing. It was actually a one-piece Mahogany body, but there were so many leftover holes in the neck and bridge areas that I needed to fill them, so a clear finish didn't look very good (I did try that first).

That's sharp. You're making me crazy. I've got unfinished projects in the loop, and people want their necks...

Cagey, you crack me up. Even I wouldn't use that horrible piece of garbage.  :hello2:

Thanks guys  :icon_thumright:

So what thickness are the showcase SG bodies ?  .... or is that it, the measurement you have given.

And yes was thinking thicker might be better ....

Photoguy, perfect perfect perfect pic's thanks  :icon_thumright:
Right in the ball park, as I was leaning with Diamond inlay's for it on Ebony.
Now that looks superb, finished all in the one colour

Really GASing now

Has that got Black Binding ?  ....  :dontknow:  looks like it.
Or wouldn't you need using the Ebony ?

If I used Diamond inlays, I would use the Angled String though to match.
I've never come to like the arched string though  :dontknow:  just me !!

Cagey ... did you fall over and hit your head, and go back to Vintage land, that looks  :icon_scratch: ...... Ummmmmmmm Crap !!
.... sorry buddy  :toothy11:

No, no. I doubt I could survive another hit on the head. That picture is just something I found on Google to show what I sorta had to start with 100 years ago, not anything I would lust after today. Way too much wrong with it.

So what thickness are the showcase SG bodies ?

1-3/4". With a finish, just a squeak more.

Updown, no binding. Just a nice jet black ebony fingerboard. I really like the diamonds. They kinda pop just a little more than dots, but not as loud as traps or blocks. If you wanna see another gorgeous combo, check out Warmoth's facebook page and see the Candy Blue carvetop Tele. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Warmoth-Guitar-Products/89032733288

I saw that, and yeah, it's gorgeous, but it is kinda weird seeing an assembled Warmoth, on a more or less official Warmoth entity...

about the headstock-colormatching thing; ask for a headstock veneer, and have that colored to your liking. that way you can have exactly what you want. works like a charm. especially if you want to go all black; just ask for an ebony headstockveneer for a nice touch, and then ask for a shot of glossy paint.

My first really good guitar was a 1968 SG, and i think a large part of the tone difference between it and a Les Paul is in the wood's thinness. Although I know that maple caps are the cause of much of the world-class drooling on this website, I also had a really good Les Paul that was a flat piece of mahogany with no cap. It wasn't a Jr. or something, just a later, budget-though-set neck Les Paul - the same that Bob Marley played, so that's what people called them - a Marley Les Paul. I would go thin on a SG build, but the bolt on really keeps it from full SG-hood. ESP makes a nice one.... :sign13:

So, I'm curious.  You have P-Rails on a couple of your guitars. Right?  You gonna put P-Rails on this or humbuckers?  Or maybe a single coil like in Cagey's picture.  How do you like the P-Rails?

@photoguy
Thanks for all your info + pic's.  :icon_thumright:

@Orpheo
Yep know about the Veneer / Ebony headstock, Got that on my Firebird below.
Very good point thou !!

@Stubhead
I got a SG 61' reissue here, so I'm not even expecting it to sound like that one. Plus don't want it to.
As I'll probably be going Maple neck with Swamp Ash body anyway.
So there's no chance it being like my other Gibo SG.
Being a bolt on neck I think the thicker body might be the go thou.

@Johnny
Yep correct, a set of P-Rails on a Strat with GK-3 …. That's all good & plenty of diff sounds.
Put a set on that because of the GK-3 into my GR-55 + VG-99
Very versatile pickups  :icon_thumright:

Got another P-Rails in the bridge only on a Tele … Again sounds great, better than a mates Fender American Tele.  :laughing7:

Ummmm …. No P90's or P-Rails on this SG, was just going to use 2 x Hum (not sure what yet) with SD Triple Shots.
May-be using a pickguard …..  :dontknow:
Contemplating / learning many things on this SG build, as I haven't done a SG or LP yet.

Have looked at the few finished SG's from here & on the warmth site.

Thanks all, for all your input and for trying to fix my GAS ……  :icon_biggrin:
:rock-on:
