Summer purchase plans. Is it still from the devil if I run it WITH my all-tube amp?  :laughing7:

My love for my amp and its sonic reliability has kept me away from stuff like this in the past but now that this won't fight my amp, I want it. If I manage to get one (used, of course  :confused4: ) I'll be keeping my modded DS-1 (sorta the definition of MY tone) and maybe a Bad Monkey for general gain control, possibly a weirdo wah I stole from a friend and my amp, and dumping a tuner, an eq and a chorus/trem that I don't use (chorus sucks and I need tap on the trem). I need a delay and noisegate and if I can find one of these used the two of those would be more expensive than this guy and now that it won't kill MY precious, hard-won tone, I'm about to jump on the bandwagon.

We played a gig the other night, and I watched the band previous to us have major issues with their modeling gear.  Tube amps to the rescue so they could finish their set.

That's why I love this. Tube amp + Distortion pedals, this is just frills. Except delay, which I do use quite a bit. But a setup like this is pretty sure-fire. I have complete faith in my amp which is why I've never messed with this kind of thing before but I'm liking the compatibility of this guy.

Because tube gear never fails???    :icon_jokercolor:

Bingo.

When it does, you fix it. I always bring spare tubes.

I wish it was like that with me. Every tube amp that I so much as look at dies.

I've had one death when I plugged my American amp into a European outlet. Never ever again.  :toothy11: But we've got spares and a tonelab for when an amp in the band dies. We're don't have THAT much faith. I just know my rig well, know how to set it up, take care of it (when I'm not plugging it into the wrong power), make it sound the way I want. In that sense, it's much more reliable to me than a modeler. No settings menus, wipes, strange digital noises, PA issues, need for a dedicated monitor, etc. etc. etc. Reliability can mean so much more than durability.

I've used my ToneLab on dozens of gigs - no issues.  'course never had a problem with tube amps either.  Maybe I'm just kind to my stuff.

I am considering another tonelab as a backup mind you - I figure I'd just bounce back from one to the other.

This conversation reminds me of a couple of months ago when my guitar player friend was getting some great sounds out of his Digitech RP500 modeler and I grabbed his guitar out of his hands and started playing. I could not make it sound like he did. He does have a very different picking and playing style than I do. I have always needed a tube preamp in the long run to feel comfortable playing so maybe it is not the modelers themselves that we need to judge but rather, which modeler and which player fit together well. Or, perhaps a certain person's playing style will never fit any modeler.

Yeah I'd agree with Gregg. Your style depends on what you play with. I'll play things on bandmates' amps and not be able to do the stuff I do with my rig and my guitar, I just know them so well. Huge reason I'm so happy someone invented a modeler that's not forcing me to choose between my amp and all the goodies inside. I think my main tone will always be the one I bought, work with, dial in, mod and tubeswap for, etc.

This is one of the most logical things i have read on this whole thread

The biggest problem I have with my modeller (well... i don't ever use the modelling on it, just the FX) is making sure the sound going through it is consistent as though it were in bypass.  Unless I get the levels just right and make sure it isn't altering my tone, then my normal tube tone and amp distortion sound like crap.

What I usually do is put my GT-10 in the FX loop and set the send / return to 5.  then I switch back and forth and tweak my volume on the pedal until the volume matches.  Then when I put it in front of the amp. bypass it and click on the amp distorion, it usually sounds good.

I just like having all the tools available to me.  I like Digital distortion AND Tube distortion.

one thing that first vid did for me is confirm that I was right to get rid of the OCD - really hate the sound of that thing

Funny how your tastes change, isn't it? I don't know how many pedals I've had over the years that I wouldn't give you a dust bunny for today, but thought at the time that they were the greatest thing since indoor plumbing.

Gentlemen,

Anyone had any experience with the Tech21 PSA 1.1?

This would interest me also. Tagging this thread now...!

Btw, I completely agree with Gregg's point earlier, and I think it boils down to know your gear.

Thankfully the Frilled Necked Lizard won't run at you for that long, but a "Superlizard" might! :laughing7:

Feisty critters, those Frilled Necks...

I wanted to kick the guy in the first video's head. Sloppy playing. I can't believe he's an actual guitarist. He looks uncomfortable playing...
