Sealer for natural masked binding?

Hello everyone
I've decided to try and do a natural masked binding on my tele and I've read on another forum that the best way to do it is to put a washcoat on the binding area and then tape it up and dye like normal.
My question is: should I do the above? Or can I just spray the binding area with 2 - 3 coats of sealer, then lightly sand, tape and dye like normal?

So washcoat or sealer?

You'll want to put a coat of sealer on after the tape too.  That'll seal the edges of the tape to keep dye from seeping under it.  I've had good luck using Behlen vinyl sealer. Whichever way you go, put a coat on after the tape.

Thanks a lot scuffcakes,
The Behlen sealer was in fact the sealer I was going to use, I like the idea of sealer over the tape as well
Cheers
