Schaller Floyd vs. Original Floyd

Any thoughts on this?
Pros, cons, etc?

I'm about to build another guitar, and even though I don't like the original floyd rose, I thought I might try the Schaller one.

I like the look & compactness of the Schaller over the OFR.
Functionally they should be identical.

Why? How is it different compared to the original fr?

It has much shorter string lock screws and is overall more 'compact'.

I've have both and much prefer the Schaller vs. the OFR. IMHO, the Schaller just seems more refined.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either one. I like to believe that being the manufacturer of OFR trems for Floyd Rose
Schaller took everything they liked and altered everything else they didnt from the OFR design when they decided to make their
own licensed version.

:rock-on:

Isn't one supposed to sound warmer than the other? They are made from different steals and the Schallers have removable knife edges. FWIW John Suhr thinks the Gotoh version sounds best.

Yeah, I know, necrobump...but anyone else have any thoughts on this? Trying to make up my mind. Probably going with the Schaller...

EDIT: Anything else out there that fits the Warmoth Schaller or OFR rout?

I'm a big fan of Schaller products. As a company, they do a consistently good job. I wish the whole product line was available here. So, that would be my vote.

As for drop-in replacements for the dreaded Floyd Rose, Schaller makes what they call a "Vintage Tremolo". Not sure why they named it that, but it has the same dimensional requirements as a Floyd without all the gimcrackery. Design-wise, they're similar to a Wilkinson, but better. I have two of them, and wish I'd known about them earlier.

As far as I can tell, the only US distributor is AllParts, and they only carry the chromed version. Plus, unless you have some kind of agreement with them, they make StewMac look like a discount house. Still, they're substantially less expensive than a Floyd, and a helluva lot less trouble.

You can special order Allparts stuff through GC for a much more reasonable price. It takes a little longer for delivery but usually it's worth it. Well there is the fact that you would be dealing with Allparts and GC on the same piece and some folks just won't be able to handle that.

I didn't know that. Have to keep it in mind. I have a niece who's a manager of a GC in Texas. She can get some staggering discounts on some things. Only problem is getting her off top dead center and on her way to ordering things. My brother (her dad) has been waiting about 2 weeks now for a set of DiMarzio humbuckers. Nothing unusual about them, but as usual, GC doesn't stock them. For as big a music store as they are, it's really surprising how little they stock. Then, what they do have has been bought and returned 2 or 3 times. They're like the old (now defunct) Comp-U-Centers, where they have their own repackaging operation in back.

When I was a manager there I ordered Allparts stuff all the time. I got it 50% off retail. I didnt even have to go through the store. Allparts would just charge my credit card if I told them it was for me. It was a good relationship :headbang:
