Sanding sealer

I am new to this forum so forgive me if it’s been asked before. Does anyone know what Warmoth uses or anyone else that does great transparent finishes, for a sanding sealer before color coats. ?

Me, I use none.  I dye the wood, then put on tru-oil.  It is a time consuming process to get it perfect.

Tru oil is not an option. Doesn’t produce the glass / mirror look that makes certain woods appear 3D. Thanks anyway.

Incorrect. Behold this TruOiled Tele.... I didn't do it. Someone else did.

You're sources have misinformed you, you can get a gloss finish ... with chatoyance, or as you call it :"3D."  I've done it ... but whatever ...

On this neck, I first dyed the birds eyes a dark amber, sanded back, and then dyed the neck a yellow golden orange.

People here won't steer you wrong.  They'll even tell you how to do it.  Maybe if you described what color you wanted, or what you were looking for someone here could give you a more productive response.  Maybe a picture of the neck or body you bought would be a start.

Your Mileage May Vary.  Mine sure did.

Maybe you can but all I was asking was some recommendations for a good sanding sealer. I use a combination of staining and transparent color with sprayed polyurethane or nitro. I am a auto refinisher by trade , so I spray everything. Have stayed away from the tru oil due to hand applying.

A very good sanding sealer that I have used often with great success is Zinsser's Seal coat de-waxed shellac.

that is, this stuff:

Have fun, and please post pictures!

That makes it easier.  I'll tell you I've never used a sealer under spray nitro, but then again I've only used it with maple, other woods may be different.  I've never used a spray poly, so someone else here will have to help you. I've only used a wipe on with good results.

I think what your asking for is a finishing schedule that involves:

1) Staining (It sounds like you've got that covered)
2) Sealer (Just need to know what kind)
3) Transparent Color with poly or nitro (you got this)
4) Top coat (As a car guy you definitely have this)

Welcome aboard, and I'd like to know how your project turns out.

I'm not going to do a search, but I think this was discussed before.  Also, you might want to look into pore filler, depending on the wood, and research compatibility issues between different types of material you lay down on your wood. Good luck.

Edit: Just noticed mayfly's response
