sanded to a smooth 220

what's the impact of this sanding or the lack of it, on finishing?

Sanding stops the wood from being jagged enough to cut a pot roast.

Sanding is good for finishing.

but what is "smooth 220"?

I believe, not 100%, but that's the grit of paper they are using 220 (I'm being serious, I could be way off)

60 = rough  -> 600 fine -> 2000 super feckin fine for polishing

Sorry, man, but with all due kindness, I'm not sure if you should be finishing a guitar. It would be WELL worth your money to get W to finish your guitar for you. They're great finishes.
